Well, I mercifully killed the Spring and Rhodies feature topics. Time to move on. Soon we will be posting updates on Fall color throughout the region. Can't come soon enough for me, personally.
We are in the midst of some of the toughest days for outdoor photography, IMO. Low water in the rivers and creeks, few or no wildflowers, a pervasive haze, and a dull, washed-out green color everywhere. Yup, I am ready for fall. How does that song go? "Wake Me Up When September Ends"?
In the meantime, to keep things moving here at SENP, lets just introduce ourselves to everyone else. I know we have alot of new people who visit, or may just lurk.
I'll start. Most of you all know me, but if not, here goes.
Richard Bernabe. I live in the Greenville SC area, love photographing landscapes here in my home state of SC (when its a bit cooler), the southern Appalachians, and outdoor sports. This is a full-time gig for me, mostly magazine/editorial work, some assignment work, teaching photography classes nearby and digital workshops with Jerry.
Who is next?
Posted by Steve Hamley on July 25, 2006 at 8:55 AM
Steve Hamley. Home is Knoxville, Tennessee and the Smokies are next door and along with the southern Blue Ridge make up the majority of my photographic subjects. I've been doing some photgraphy on the Cumberland Plateau, a very highly under rated area with enormous potential. Photgraphy is a hobby; I work full time at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, TN as a senior radiation protection specialist.
I shoot film cameras, 6x7cm medium format, 4x5, 8x10, and 8x20.
Jill Snyder, relatively new to the forum. Live in Atlanta, GA. Have been focusing on photography exclusively in the lastt 8 months while I'm on sabbatical from troubled commercial loan management at an Atlanta bank. I've been traveling to Africa annually on safari for the last few years but have only started making digital photos with decent equipment. Also have been attending seminars and traveling as much as possible during this "time off." Am off to Africa for 2 wks on 8/15.
I've enjoyed this forum and have learned quite a bit from the critiques of my and others' work.
I'm Bill Stice. Been around here for a long time. I live in Cary, North Carolina and shoot primarily nature except for work. I work in the technology field for a local government but about 30 % of my time is serving as their primary photographer as well. All my nature stuff is just for me although I do sell a print or two now and then. I shoot film in 35mm, 4 1/2 X 6 medium format and 4 X 5 for my own stuff. I shoot mostly digital at work. I do some large format shots of our historical sites and facilities for enlarging to 30 X 40 and larger prints. Most recent project was to photograph a park scene and have it enlarged it to 14 feet X 20 feet. It was enlarged in 4' X 4' sections, printed as duratrans and put in backlit window frames on the visitor center wall. Welcome aboard Jill!

Fall color updates soon...I'm ready! I'm Alice Scoggins..I live in Rutherfordton, NC with my husband Gene, 19 year old son Stephen and dachshund Roxy. I'm an insurance adjuster working in property-casualty. Photography is a hobby, although I've sold just a FEW images! I spend as much free time as I can muster out shooting in the beautiful areas in western N.C. Spending time in nature with my camera is my much needed down-time, after a week of auto accidents, trees on houses, and insurance contracts! Welcome Jill, and hope to hear from all of you in the Southeast!
Posted by Harry Davis on July 25, 2006 at 11:21 PM
Hi Everybody... Harry Davis in Greenville SC just lurking and learning and having tons of fun out shooting every chance I get. Photography is a hobby for me... a habit supported by my day job as a dentist. I'm like Alice... spending time in nature with my camera is how I recharge my batteries. I'm married with two teenaged daughters so finding time for recharging can be difficult to do We're heading to the Outer Banks next week for vacation so while the "girls" are still in bed I'll be out before sunrise roaming the dunes. If I get some decent shots I'll post a few for critique when I get back. It's nice to learn a little about all of you... thanks for the thread, Richard!

Hey everyone,
Welcome Jill..
I'm Leann (pronounced Lee-ann) Greene,
Originaly from the Northern Midwest-Minnesota;I currently live in the foot hills of Western NC-Morganton. I work for a chemical company that apparently doesn't make the products you buy but DOES make them better.
I have been shooting steady for almost 3 years now on my days off. I love the whole mountain area & it's wildlife. I spend most of my time in the local area. I also enjoy shooting at my son's baseball games.
I am currently shooting with the lowly digital rebel and hope to upgrade by early next year.
Posted by Lori Kincaid on July 26, 2006 at 8:36 AM
Lori Kincaid here. I've been hanging around NPN since early 2002, but my participation is sporadic due to phone line problems and a SLOW dial-up modem. (The phone repairman tells me I'm lucky to even have a phone where I live ) I live in the mountains on the NC-TN state line near Max Patch and love every minute of it. It's good to 'see' some new faces around here. Welcome to Jill and Harry!
Hey everyone - Nick Moore, Charlotte NC. I am a British citizen, born and bred, but moved to Colorado in 1999, then to NC in 2003. I make annual trips back to England and usually mainland Europe, and of course always take my camera!.
I am what I would class as a semi-professional photographer; I work a full time job as a Professional Surveyor/CAD drafter, but on the photography side I sell to Blue Ridge Parkway stores, Magazines, galleries, and do offer seasonal workshops.
I started off in photography over 15 years ago, but really have been serious about it over the past 7. I switched over from shooting slides in 2004 to Digital, and I'm loving the flexibility that digital now offers.
I am relatively new to NPN (joined earlier in 2006), but I am not new to online Photo Forums, I have to say though that NPN is one of the best!!.
Posted by Bill Chambers on July 26, 2006 at 10:02 AM
Bill Chambers. Not new to NPN, but brand new to this forum. I live in Gulf Breeze, Florida, across the bay from Pensacola. Nature photography is my part time hobby but full time passion. I pay the bills by working as a Financial Consultant with AmSouth Investment Services in Pensacola. I shoot approx. 95% landscapes and 5% wildlife. I love the swamps and lowlands of Florida, as well as the barrier islands in winter. Sadly, the REAL Florida seems to be disappearing right before my eyes - the developers of south Florida have finally discovered extreme NW Florida. So very sad.

Well, I'm a lurker of sorts, but been logged on here for awhile now. It's nice to see new faces too.
I'm Tammy Keever. I live in the Knoxville, TN area (Oak Ridge to be exact) and I work as a chemist (analytical/research) at Oak Ridge National Lab.
I picked up a 35mm SLR when I was about 13, but only really started to try to understand things, and shoot more after my 3rd child was born, which was 3 years ago. I have three children, 14yr, 5yr and 3 yr. Taking pictures is a hobby. I use everything, from pinholes, toycameras, medium format, to 8x10. I develop and print BW in my makeshift darkroom (which is the laundery room). Currently, I have some bw "stuff" hanging in a local restaurant in town. So, I mainly shoot for myself, and I tend to shoot a bit of nature, just because I'm so close to the SMNP, and because this is such a beautiful area. Someday when the kids are older and I have more time, I might try to devote more energy to landscape work. I enjoy trying to capture my children too, because they are growing, and I like to record all the memories that I can. No digital for me, though. Just film- and mostly black and white.
Hey everybody! I'm the other moderator and co-workshop guy with Richard "Bern" Bernabe. Most everyone knows me, I'm the trouble-maker at NPN , no really! Anyway, I'm a ex-large-format guy now shooting an EOS 5D and I'm loving it! I'm also the founder and now CEO of Mountain Trail Press, a small publisher specializing in the nature of the Mid-Atlantic and Southeastern states. I mostly shoot for my publications but have really started to focus more on conservation work in these areas.
Also, welcome all! We're so glad you guys are here!
Les Saucier, I live in paradise, Weaverville, NC. I am 15 minutes from the Parkway, an hour from the Smokies and a little over an hour from Roan Mountain. I am a retired biologist/bio-photographer turned full time nature photographer. I do fine art, stock and teach nature photography. Some of my teaching partners are Nancy Rotenberg, Don McGowan and Jeff Miller. I am also the co-coordinator with Lee Morgan of the CNPA Asheville region. Y'all are invited to any of our field trips. Check it out CNPA-Asheville.org.
My specialty is macro but Nikon’s 12-24mm is so sweet I find myself reaching for it more and more these days, even for macro work. Who knew?
Alice, looking at your amazing portfolio I see that we photograph in many of the same places. I am sure we have met on some outing or I truly look forward to shooting with you on a future CNPA outing.

Les,
You got me beat and I thought I was close to the parkway at being about 30 minutes from the Hwy 181 junction!
I'm Bruce Painter from Dalton, Ga. (The carpet capital of the world) and work as a yarn mill supervisor for one of the largest carpet manufactors.
I live out in the country away from town and I have always be into the outdoors and nature. I got my first camera as a high scool graduation gift. Twenty years ago I started working part-time in the B&W darkroom for a local studio in addition to my full time job. I had basicly stopped doing any photography for "me" until the time that the studio went digital with the original Canon 1D. That got me interested again and two years ago I went digital with the 10D and just recently the 30D. I love photographing wildlife especially deer, so Cades Cove is one of my favorite places. I have also started working on some landscape/scenic photography.
Richard, thanks for the kind words. I will post some flowers and macro stuff.

Hello everyone, I'm not sure if Louisville is considered SE or Midwest so I'll throw my name in here as well. I think it's cool that everyone here gets along and even shoot together. I just moved to Kentucky 3.5 months ago from California and the humidity is killing me. I haven't been to any of the southeastern states yet.
Posted by Joe Baltimore on August 1, 2006 at 1:12 PM
Hello All. Joe Baltimore here. I live in the RTP area of NC, and I always find myself going West for photo ops, but JerryG keeps telling me to go East, too! I am woefully ignorant of the beauty of the Outer Banks of this state.
I am a Tennesseean by the grace of God, merely transplanted to a neighboring state for a bit.
I do not believe there is a more beautiful spot in the world I have seen (some 750,000 miles covered in 10 years) than the GSMNP. I believe I could quit my job now and photograph to my end days and never see it and capture it all in there.
My biggest problem in my photographic endeavors is that I have to relearn the basics almost every time I go out as there are vast gaps in between. Maybe some day I will fix that. This is a wonderful, and very encouraging group to be a part of.
Yeah Richard, if you are a Kentuckian, youre a southerner. Well, kinda. Welcome.
Joe Welcome. I know you have been shooting with Jerry some, but I wont hold that against you.

Hi everyone, Jim Hasapis here in Huntersville, NC. I work fulltime for Fujifilm as a Frontier minilab tech in the Charlotte area. I've been a photographer for 20 years, been to every nook and cranny in the Carolinas. Shoot everything from 35mm Velvia to D200 to 4x5, depending on the subject and my mood. I've probly met some of you in the field as I travel extensively and frequently shoot along the coast and the mountains, especially the smokies.
Matthew Cromer here. I currently shoot a Sony R1 digital, as the new horse farm and vet bills used up all the money I had available for spending on film and processing for my former LF kit.
I like shooting the smokies, blue ridge parkway areas, Roan, Weymouth, and the coastal areas.
My photos are at http://www.pbase.com/sdaconsulting
The day job is writing software, the night job is mucking horse stalls, and in between some family time with my wife and 2 kids. Not too much time for photography these days. . .

Nice to read a little about you. I checked out your photo link-just curious: do you also have any wildlife or equine shots posted somewhere? Great work .
Don't really post my equine stuff. Not sure why. Maybe I'll give it a shot at some point.
Thanks for the compliment!

Ron Pullen here in Owensboro, Kentucky. I shoot 35mm and still shoot film. All Nikon equipment. I try to get to the Smokies every year and also venture west to the Rockies annually. Big South Fork is another favorite.
Day job is construction as a pipefitter/plumber out of Local 633. Have a working vacation planned for this fall to Antarctica at South Pole station for 6 months.
Nice to meet all of you fine photographers. Ron
Yeah Richard I've been on call last 2 weeks for work. No time to do anything much . . . Just checked in and noticed the thread.

Hi All,
I am Scott Hoerner living in Apex (suburb of Raleigh), NC. I work in the IT industry on the Marketing side. I have owned 35mm, 645, 6x7, 6x12, 6x17 & 4x5. Then the kids arrived and I shoot Canon digital. I primarily shoot landscapes when I can get the time. Lately it has been more macro and floral shots since I can do those in my yard. I have been doing a lot of stitched landscapes lately as I've always been a fan of 3:1 format shots. I hope to see you all up in the Smokies this fall. For you Raleigh shooters we need to plan another breakfast soon.
Posted by Les Saucier on August 11, 2006 at 8:40 PM
Scott,
I love your stitched images from the Smokies on your web site. What are you using to stitch them together?
Posted by Scott Hoerner on August 11, 2006 at 8:48 PM
Thanks Les,
I mostly use PTGui or AutoPano Pro. PTGui is the best bang for the buck especially with the Enblend software builtin to blend seams.

Hello everybody,
I am Robert Cable from Clemmons, NC. I haven't been very active here lately, been pretty busy with a 2 year old son, 8 month old daughter, and marketing my photographs. It is nice to see some new names here, welcome all.
Currently, I am shooting with a 4x5 view camera and I recently switched from a Nikon F5 to shooting digital with a D2x ( learning digital workflow and organization is eating up way to much of my time ).I like to shoot anything that interests me, from macro work to landscape. I like photographing The Smokies, Parkway, Shenandoah, some local areas, and venture off to other areas of the country a couple of times per year.
Right now I am using the "scrapper" business plan - I market through the internet (print sales and image use), I average about 25 calendar credits a year, had a couple of articles published, and I am represented by 4 stock agencies.
It is nice to see all of your posted images: different styles, techniques, and locations. I hope to see you out in the field. In the coming months I plan to update my website so you can see some new images. Take care everyone.
Posted by Steve Hamley on August 12, 2006 at 7:14 AM
Glad to hear from you Robert. I wondered about the new addition (baby not D2x), glad to hear things are going well.
Posted by Jack Riley on August 13, 2006 at 10:25 PM
Hi folks. Jack Riley here in Raleigh, working in the parcel delivery business and photographing weekends and all vacations using 35mm film; landscapes, plants, etc.. I do the Smokies, BRP, etc on vacations and locally on weekends. I still have film from June Roan/BRP trip that needs to be sent for processing! No web presence yet, hope to use my NPN space eventually.
Scott, a meeting of the Raleigh area gang sounds good.

Steve,
Thanks for asking about the new addition, she (Rose) is wonderful. On the other hand, the D2x may very well be the most expensive dissappointment I have ever purchased.
Richard,
I'll post some Glacier images when I get caught up on organizing my digital files. I'm still not finished with shots from The Smokies back in April. Unfortunately, by my standards the trip to Glacier turned out to be mediocre as far as what I brought back image wise. The weather was the exact same for 9 days: hot and very sunny. It rained one day for about a 1/2 hour, that was really the only variation. Great for hiking but not the greatest for capturing different moods and subjects in the park.

Hi, everyone. I'm Chad Ward. I just moved to Apex, NC, so I'm relatively new to this section of the NPN forums. I'm making the transition to digital with a new D200, which is a lot of fun. I thought my post-processing skills were adequate, but shooting RAW changes the equation dramatically. I might as well be drawing in the mud with a stick. I still have a fridge full of Velvia and NPZ (the best indoor sports film ever), so the F6 will still get a workout every once in a while.
I'm a freelance writer and have recently started using my photography to illustrate my own articles and pieces, so I'm trying to teach myself the fine art of studio and food photography. It's going slowly, but at least I eat well.
If the Raleigh field trip/get together happens, I'd love to tag along.

Hi, I am Cindy Nowlin. Just moved to Maryville, TN area from central Florida about a month ago. I am loving having Cades Cove and GSM so close. I hope to venture out and do more of the GSM and get into BRP more, maybe into VA. In FL, I mostly did bird photography and macro, so now I am switching gears and doing mostly Landscapes and wildlife. I still manage to see a bird or two or a pretty flower along the way. Also still learning my way around, found all the side roads at cades cove. Don't like the crowds, but since i was up this way last year, I know it will only get worse in Oct. For now, its quiet and sometimes there are just a few of us out there during the week. Soon I will get the dreaded daytime job and it will take me away from the beauty of the mountains and behind a desk all day long. Paycheck will be nice for new camera gear I am finding I need.
Looking forward to getting to know everyone. And I will enjoy the photos in the meantime.

Thanks for the welcome. I use to post on the Florida section of this mb quiet awhile back. But I enjoy talking with others who enjoy photography as much as I do. I do love this area and get up to the mountains as much as I can. Will be going to Cades Cove tommorrow and then maybe to Tremont area and wherever else I can squeeze in. Last week the light was awesome till almost noon, usually it gets harsh around 9am I have found. But it was perfect longer last week, hopefully it will do the same tommorrow.

I'm Greg Coates. I'm not living in North Carolina right now, but I grew up in Weaverville. I always drag my camera with me when I visit family, and North Carolina is still one of my favorite places in the world to photograph.
I'm primarily a medium format nature shooter, but I also do a few weddings and portraits.
Hi everyone, I'm Phillip Patterson. I live in Knoxville and work for a fractional airline. I still shoot film through either Nikon, Mamiya, or Pentax. I am becoming jealous of my wife's D70 with the flexibilty of digital but I sure love the excitement of waiting on my slides to return home. We enjoy the Smokies but are always drawn to the grand rocky landscapes out west and the wildlife of Africa. I admit I never post pics as I am always in awe of the exceptional beauty that others leave for me to enjoy on this site.

Hi everyone,
Brand new to this forum so rip me a new one. I live in North Central Florida (Gainesville area) and have been shooting for roughly 3-4 years. No techni training or schooling for me, learn as I go here, (lol). I think this is most likely the truth of the matter in most cases as lighting varies on a moments notice and without warning and all the little things they didn't tell you in class or at the seminar tend to occur when your in the process of capture.
Anyway I shoot digital, Nikon d70 (the original) and have a few lenses. My website doesn't entirely reflect what I do and I'm always making changes there and adding new stuff. Nature and Landscapes are some of the toughest shots to master sometimes I think because there is no control of the lighting and like I said it changes "snap" like that. I don't have alot of landscape imagery there currently but will be posting more as time goes. Looking forward to posting and reveiwing new stuff likewise.

I practice daily and have learned so much here on NPN. I just became a member last week and love the comments and tips people give on my photos. I currently shoot with a Canon Rebel XT and I have 3 lenses, one that is an L series 24-105 lense that I love. I am looking to purchase a 30D and maybe a 100-400mm Canon lense in the near future. My wife of a year and a half states that I can only purchase with money made from photography.
I work full time as a Senior Graphic Designer at a telecommunications company in Rock Hill and love it.
I look forward to posting more photos here and getting better at photography with everyone heres help.

Hi all, I'm Troup Nightingale, a newcomer to NPN, PhotoPortpholios, and SENP. I live in Brunswick, GA around the Golden Isles of St. Simons, Jekyll, and Cumberland Islands. Been shooting for 25 years or so; but didn't get the "picture" until about maybe 8 years ago. I enjoy what I call Documentary photography of historic areas, or specific things that interest me as a hard core amateur (though I sell a few things here and there and have photos in the local news from time to time). I've been branching out in many different photographic areas over the past years. My site is up at Southeastern Photography which should show up here as my "www". Look forward to conversing and sharing with all you folks up "North" in the South East and you Southern Floridians!

Hi everyone. I'm Lynn Wiezycki. I just joined NPN and set up my portfolio. I live in the Tampa, FL area. Have been back into photography for about 2 years since buying my first DSLR, a Nikon D70. Have since purchased a D200 and love it. I shoot mostly flowers and animals, macros being my favorite. Just love to see what things look like up that close. The beautiful landscapes many of you have ready access to just aren't that prevalent in FL except sunrises and sunsets over the water. We do have plenty of plant life and places to get fairly close to animals. I'm looking forward to learning from and sharing with all.

I'm taking up the kids weekend after next to the Smokies. Love to run into you if you're there. Color looks to be good this year. . .

Howard Hall here. I live in Gainesville, Fl and enjoy photographing landscapes and waterscapes. Just recently have been making some attempts at waterfowl and wading birds, there are plenty down here in FL. I really enjoy the Carolinas and Georgia and will be heading up to Tn in a week, hope the fall colors have started.

New to this forum. Current hometown is Miami, Florida, with the Everglades right next door. The cooler, drier weather is heralding the start of the shooting season down here. I work as an educator, but also work as a photographer through editorial sales, prints, and workshops. Shoot mostly digital now, although I still have my film bodies in reserve.
Looking forward to more Florida photography here in SENP.

I believe I'm a "tweener". Neither NE or SE. I've been in Virginia Beach for over 25 years. I travel quite a bit and focus on wildlife and landscape photographer where ever I go. I make my living as a wedding/portrait photographer. I basically use Fuji S-2's and some Nikon's. Have tooooo much invested to consider going Canon. I get to Florida a couple times a year for some birding as well as Chincoteaque and my own tidewater area. www.bob-swanson.com

My name is Brian Robbins and I am new to this forum and the NPN. I am a professional Architectural photographer based in Atlanta, GA.
I grew up in Knoxville, TN next to the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. I photograph building and interiors for a living, but I love to travel, hike and photograph landscapes and nature. I love to get away to the mountains and the ocean when I am not photographing buildings .
I am a graduate of the Art Institute of Atlanta and have been a professional photographer for 23 years.
I hope to learn from everyone in this forum, pass along some of my knowledge and maybe make a few new friends along the way.

Brian, welcome to NPN and SENP. We are always excited to have new folks join the group. We are looking forward to seeing some posts and perhaps meeting in one of our group get-togethers. We usually organize them through this regional forum. Again welcome!

Paul McCroskey here from Lynchburg, VA. I purchased a Canon Digital Rebel 2 years ago and have been hooked on photography ever since. I'm mostly interested in wildlife photography. I can't wait for the weekend to get out with my camers. Some of my favorite places are Cades Cove, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and Shenandoah. I'm always exploring for new places. I have just started a web site with a series of Bear and Fawn photos from Cades Cove and Shenandoah at http://paulscamera.smugmug.com/Animals.
For my regular job I work in computer support for a large Exterminating Company. I joined the local photography club but I am the only member interested in Nature photography. While the club is a great place to learn about photography in general, I would love to meet up with and work with other photographers interested in nature photography.
I have been a member of NPN for 2 years and rarely miss single day of new photos. I have learned so much from this site. I have not posted many photos myself but hope to start participating soon.
Dont be shy about sharing some of your images with us!

Ok, might as well dive right in.
I'm Liz Masoner from central Alabama. Don't see any other Alabama folks on the forum (could easily have overlooked it though) but here I am. I've been taking nature shots off and on for close to 30 years. Like a lot of folks, my first "real" camera was a Pentax K1000. Currently shooting with a Digital Rebel (first generation) but planning on going back to Pentax with the new K10D really soon.
I particularly like taking waterfowl pics. Swans, Herons, Egrets, Ducks, and so on. On the non-avian side I like general scenics and then the tiny things. Butterflies, dragonflies, mushrooms, dew on grass.
Anyway, hello all!

Hello from the Treasure Coast of Florida, Port St Lucie to be exact. I am an adjunct instructor at a junior college, but am trying to break into photography as a means of making my 'golden years' a bit more golden. I will ask a lot of questions, as I am trying to learn as much as I can, as fast as I can. I am ready to accept all the 'constructive' criticism you can send my way.
I have visited the Carolinas and have to say I love the mountains. There is a totally different feel in the type of photography in contrast to Florida. Natures creatures and flora down here (south Florida) have to be real survivors. I use a Canon 300D, Canon and Sigma lenses.

De-lurking: been a member of NPN for couple of years. I live in NE Florida - its not listed in the SENP but in every way except boundary its part of Georgia (if those Oglethorpe followers had been more successful ;-) Before moving to Georgia (whoops, I mean NE Florida), I lived for a number of years in Virginia/Maryland area.
Most of my 45 years in photography, I've used 35mm color slide film with most images of gardens & landscapes. After seeing a Clyde Butcher exhibit about 6 yrs ago, I realized that B&W in Florida is achievable; and its become my passion. The past 5 years I've been using LF gear (4X5, 8X10 & 7X17). I do my own processing with a darkroom rigged up in garage thanks to blackout cloth & my wife's sewing abilities. I continue to be primarily interested in landscapes & gardens.
Welcome to SENP, Doug. Florida IS a part of our group so don't be shy, just jump on in. We would love to see some of your work.
Posted by Bill Stice on February 19, 2007 at 8:25 AM
Welcome Doug. I'd certainly like to see some of your black and white work. I've seen quite a bit of Clyde Butcher's work and it is stunning. I would certainly agree that black and white is very achievable in Florida. Welcome!

Hola! New blood, here on the NPN & What-not! Currently living in central Florida and battling a life-long addiciton to all things animal. Particularly the reptiles & birds. Just can't seem to get enough of hiking about, photographing them, and so forth...
Anyhow, moving to Anchorage, Alaska in July, so I'm trying to share the love as much as I can while I'm still here! Loving the forums, loving the photography, loving the words -
And looking forward to what's to come!

Welcome Janson,
Your website is a real treat to look through. I especially like the shallow DoF shots of the snakes looking head on. Also the otter looking up from the river is adorable. Nice collection and informative too!
Posted by Janson Jones on March 13, 2007 at 6:31 AM
Thank you, Leann. Very kind words! And I've got to say, your website is pretty dang awesome! Love the design, love the photography. I'm a particular fan of "Web Wave Weaver" on your site (and "Solar Web" on your NPN Portfolio). Tremendously cool.
I do love photo sites that focus and represent particular regions conciously. It's a great resource, not just for photography, but also for learning a bit about regionality. There's much celebration to be had in the places we call home.
Hi everyone. I am Jackie Howell, kinda-sorta new to NPN. I became a member about three weeks ago,but I am not new to photography. I have love the art since I was old enough to know how to take pictures. I am still learning though. I have just recently relocated to the Atlanta area, which for me is ideal since it is more or less located in the center of Georgia.Close to the beaches, mountains and other areas of interest. I feel as though I personally know most of you, since I have looked at most of your photographs, and beautiful they are. I am one of those photographers that buy from other photographers, and love showing it off. I do like them signed. My equipment is not up to par yet, but will be soon--so watch out.
Hi everyone. I am Brian Murphy, and have been lurking here for about 3 years and just became a member. I live in Durham, near RDU and teach science at a Wake County high school. I graduated from NC State in '74 with a BS in Wildlife Biology. Like I said, I have been lurking for a few years but after finally moving out of the PNS world I feel ready to put my love for nature into image making. I have taken many almost good photographs over the years and look forward to getting more creative and using better gear. I have been using an XTI for a few months with my old Canon lenses but now loooking to buy some new glass, starting with a good wide angle before I take off to Germany for 3 weeks in June and then off to Maine for a environmental science teacher workshop. My favorite places in NC include, because I am a birder, Lake Mattamuskeet, Pocossin NWR and any other swampy area. I hang around Falls Lake, Umstead SP and Lake Crabtree. Hopefull this fall I will meet some of you in the mountains.
I already own a 100-300 and a 28-105, but both have some fungal growth on the inside. Had the 100-300 cleaned but not the 28-105, yet.
Open to suggestions for my wide-angle. My list includes -
Sigma 18-50 2.8 (new version) or 10-20, 17-35 or 12-24
Canon 10-22
Tamron 11-18,or 12-24 or 17-50
Tokina 12-24
Welcome Brian,
I use the XTI also . Did you buy yours as the kit bundle? If so don't be dismissive of the 18-55 EFS that comes with it. If you want that price range you may consider looking at buying used and I like buying from www.keh.com.
Brian, welcome! Matthew Cromer, Jack Riley, Scott Hoerner and I get together regularly on a weekend morning for breakfast. We usually coordinate it here and we'd be glad to have you at the next one. I too am a biologist even though I don't work in that field currently. My background is in botany. Welcome!
Hi to All!
I live in Nashville, TN. I have taken up the task of learning to photograph birds, with the belief that if you can consistently get good bird shots, you should be able to photograph almost anything! So far I am nowhere near consistent, but am enjoying learning to identify new species.
I also enjoy shooting landscapes and wildflowers.
I really need help in Photoshop! (especially in sharpening )
I retired in March and hope to get in some interesting traveling in the next few years.
Durwood, welcome aboard. This is a great site and a great group at the SENP. Looking forward to seeing some of your posts. Congratulations on your retirement.

Lance Warley...Boca Raton, Florida.
I've been reading the forums for awhile and just became a member. I'm a newbie hobbyist, enjoying every minute of it. Canon XTi with a 17-85 and a 70-300, moving to a 400 5.6L to help with birds in flight.
I live near three wetlands, and if anyone is ever in the area, I'd be happy to help you find them.
I just posted my first picture, and I'm looking forward to your suggestions.
Hi Lance and welcome to SENP. Very nice duck image!

I am a bit late getting in on this post but figured better late than never! I just joined NPN yesterday (July 10) but have been visiting and reading the forum for a while. I live on the Outer Banks in NC and will be moving to Raleigh in a few months, job transfer. I have been shooting for about 4 years now and have a lot to learn so don't worry about being nice when I post an image, I think you learn more from critics than from friends some times. I have a website which is in desperate need of updates but aren't they all. After viewing some of the member websites I have quite the challenge keeping up but look forward to it!
Posted by Leann Greene on July 12, 2007 at 12:14 AM
Eric, welcome. When you get to Raleigh, keep an eye on this forum. A group of us including Scott Hoerner, Matthew Cromer, Jack Riley and myself meet for breakfast on a fairly regular basis. We'd be happpy to have you join us. We usually organize it through this forum. Again welcome!
We'll be doing that breakfast that Bill mentioned soon, probably in August. If you can't make it I'm sure we'll meet again later in the year, perhaps November or December. . .
Thanks for the offer! My wife and I won't be in Raleigh until October so November or December sounds like the best for me. I think my wife is tired of me trying to explain photography to her so we can talk, meeting some others would be great. I look forward to it.

I'm Bruce Watson in Raleigh. I'm a retired engineer. Been using a 5x4 camera for years, mostly B&W, but using color negative film some over the last couple of years.
I too am looking forward to fall. Photography in the flat lands is tough in the summer.
Welcome Bruce. As you can see from above and in another post a group of us in the Raleigh area are planning a breakfast at 7 AM at the Bob Evans Restaurant on August 4. We'd be glad to have you attend and meet some of the group.

Well, i'm not sure if anyone will read this, but I stumbled upon this thread while looking back through the many pages of the SE forum. I really enjoy looking at everyone's work, and it is a privilege to have you guys look at mine and offer praise and/or critique. It can only make me a better photographer.
I live in South Mississippi and work in the environmental regulatory field. I've been shooting for about 15 years now but not professionally. When I took up the hobby I did pursue it professionally, and even had some stuff published locally, but found that the more money I made from it, the less I enjoyed it, and the less I could shoot what I enjoyed shooting, which is nature. So it became just a hobby and will probably remain that, but who knows.
I have spent quite a bit of time in the smokies, but most of my time is spent boating here on the coast, particularly in and around the barrier islands. I have a boat, a waverunner, and two kayaks so coastal photgraphy is becoming my niche. All the white sand and water, harsh lighting, and flatness makes it a challenging environment. Even more challenging is trying to keep my equipment in good shape (and dry). To say that taking a 50 mile day trip on a waverunner, sometimes in 2-3 ft. seas in 100 degree heat with 1500 dollars worth of camera equipment neatly packed away in my bow compartment makes me nervous is an understatement.
If any of you are ever in the area, look me up!

Hello! I found this thread and thought I would introduce myself as a newbie to the forum. Bristol, TN is my life long home and live here with my wife and two kids. I have been into photography for about 25 years. My first camera was the "mighty" Nikon EM SLR while I was in high school. Nature and sports photography are my primary passions, but have also done portraits, weddings, infrared, underwater, travel, and architecture photography as well. I love to travel and have been fortunate enough to photograph on six continents. I am hoping to add Antarctica to finish out the set next year. Glacier, Yellowstone, Yosemite, Denali, and Bryce Canyon are a few of my favorite spots in North America, but I actually really enjoy photographing around the Mountain Empire of NE Tennesse and SW Virginia. I currently shoot Nikon equipment - 2 D3s, D700, etc and lenses from 14mm - 500mm Nikkors. I have shot Canon as well but prefer Nikon. Different strokes thing!!! LOL I enjoy browsing through this forum and I will try to contribute where possible.

Howdy, I've been hanging around here for a couple years now but also missed this thread until now. I live in Manassas, VA. I know Richard from a fly fishing forum we both belong to. I'm a research ecologist with the Dept. of Interior and have been into photography for about 40 years now. I started in high school with a Minolta SRT101 but graduated to Canon about 30 years ago.
In addition to my professional career I was a Contributing Editor to Model Railroading Magazine for about 15 years, publishing over 150 articles and hundreds of photos. I just had a book published that I did the photogrpahy for. For the last 6 years I've been an Associate Editor for the Journal of Environmental Quality.
However, I've always been interested in wildlife and nature photography and when I converted from film to digital a couple years ago I began the learning process to pursue that path. Right now I'm shooting a Canon 50D with a 24-105 lens. Next purchases will be either a Tokina 12-24 or Canon 10-22 (any recommendations) and later on a 100-400 to cover the range.
This is my last year as a working stiff and after that I plan to concentrate almost full time on photography--well I'll still have to do some fishing but the camera can go along for that too. If all goes as planned the wife and I will be relocating to Asheville after I retire next year so I'll be in your backyard Richard--Larry
Discussion
149 repliesWe are in the midst of some of the toughest days for outdoor photography, IMO.
I shoot film cameras, 6x7cm medium format, 4x5, 8x10, and 8x20.
Steve
I've enjoyed this forum and have learned quite a bit from the critiques of my and others' work.
Steve
Lori
That wasn't your plant in Morganton that exploded recently was it?
Steve
Nope...thank goodness or it probably would be tracked back to me
.."Now let's see you were on the computer when...."
Also, welcome all! We're so glad you guys are here!
My specialty is macro but Nikon’s 12-24mm is so sweet I find myself reaching for it more and more these days, even for macro work. Who knew?
Oh yeah, you would not like Weaverville.
You got me beat and I thought I was close to the parkway at being about 30 minutes from the Hwy 181 junction!
Les, you need to post more of your awesome flower and macro images here!
--Les
I am a plant operator at a coal prep plant, but would rather be in the mountains with my camera
I checked out your photo link-just curious: do you also have any wildlife or equine shots posted somewhere?
http://www.pbase.com/sdaconsulting/wildlife_and_animals
Don't really post my equine stuff. Not sure why. Maybe I'll give it a shot at some point.
Thanks for the compliment!
Day job is construction as a pipefitter/plumber out of Local 633. Have a working vacation planned for this fall to Antarctica at South Pole station for 6 months.
Nice to meet all of you fine photographers. Ron
Matthew, its about time we heard from you!
I love your stitched images from the Smokies on your web site. What are you using to stitch them together?
I mostly use PTGui or AutoPano Pro. PTGui is the best bang for the buck especially with the Enblend software builtin to blend seams.
Steve
Nice of you guys to check in
Robert, any images from Glacier for us?
Scott, a meeting of the Raleigh area gang sounds good.
Jack

I'm a freelance writer and have recently started using my photography to illustrate my own articles and pieces, so I'm trying to teach myself the fine art of studio and food photography. It's going slowly, but at least I eat well.
If the Raleigh field trip/get together happens, I'd love to tag along.

You have an awesome area available to you being so close to Cades Cove.
I'm primarily a medium format nature shooter, but I also do a few weddings and portraits.
Welcome,
Take the dive in and post
I work full time as a Senior Graphic Designer at a telecommunications company in Rock Hill and love it.
I look forward to posting more photos here and getting better at photography with everyone heres help.

I too am new to this forum but have been a member now for a couple of years. I live in Macon, Ga area and I enjoy photographing Landscapes and the many intimate scenes that exist in Landscape photography. I also own a software development company(17 Years) and have just opened up a portrait photography business photographing children and families mostly on location using natural light. My passion is still Landscape photography and I hope to be able to walk away from my other company very soon to pursue a career in portrait & Landscape photograpy. Great to be here and see everyon's passion expressed through their pictures.

Welcome,
Wonderfully impressive work on your website.
I'm Carl, an Aussie living in Atlanta, GA, in the colder months and Alaska in the summer. I've run across many of you on the forums, but I thought I better stop in and introduce myself here, particularly as I just asked fomr some suggestions on another thread here. My photo site is www.skolaiimages.com - named after one of my 2 favorite places in the whole world, Skolai Pass, in Wrangell - St. Elias National Park, Alaska. I should have a bunch of new images u pthere in a week or 2.
Cheers
Carl
I'm taking up the kids weekend after next to the Smokies. Love to run into you if you're there. Color looks to be good this year. . .
Dont be shy about posting any images. I LOVE your deer and fawn images. Just wonderful!
I just joined NPN this week and several of you appear to be local to me. I'm in Bryson City, NC. Hope to get to know you all better!

Dont be shy about sharing some of your images with us!
I have visited the Carolinas and have to say I love the mountains. There is a totally different feel in the type of photography in contrast to Florida. Natures creatures and flora down here (south Florida) have to be real survivors. I use a Canon 300D, Canon and Sigma lenses.

I'm Jamie Simone from Mars Hill, Nc . I have been into photography for about 4 years.
I took a class a ab tech with Richard and learned alot. I have been lurking here for months.
Looking forward to meeting some of you @ the get together.
Anyhow, moving to Anchorage, Alaska in July, so I'm trying to share the love as much as I can while I'm still here! Loving the forums, loving the photography, loving the words -
And looking forward to what's to come!

Your website is a real treat to look through. I especially like the shallow DoF shots of the snakes looking head on. Also the otter looking up from the river is adorable. Nice collection and informative too!
I do love photo sites that focus and represent particular regions conciously. It's a great resource, not just for photography, but also for learning a bit about regionality. There's much celebration to be had in the places we call home.
~ janson!
I will probably keep it at or below $500.
......and this $30 tripod has G
Brian
Brian I use the EFS 10-22 and I can say that it is a sweet lens!! I think the price though on B&H anyway is still upwards of 700.
I use the XTI also . Did you buy yours as the kit bundle? If so don't be dismissive of the 18-55 EFS that comes with it. If you want that price range you may consider looking at buying used and I like buying from www.keh.com.
(especially in sharpening
I retired in March and hope to get in some interesting traveling in the next few years.

We'll be doing that breakfast that Bill mentioned soon, probably in August. If you can't make it I'm sure we'll meet again later in the year, perhaps November or December. . .
I too am looking forward to fall. Photography in the flat lands is tough in the summer.
Looking forward to seeing some of your work.
