I just got the email announcement from Adobe.
I gather from your comment that the windows beta is a worthwhile download ???

I think the whole concept of Lightroom is worthwhile. Time will tell if it's really ready for full production use.

For whatever reason I can't create an account or log in (even after resetting my password on the existing account). So far - not impressed

Well it turns out that you need Windows XP SP2 to run it and I only have Windows 2000. Looks like I'd have to spend more money. :frown:

I'm not familar with Windows XP SP2 - do you know if it can run with XP Pro?

SP2 is service pack 2. Both XP Home and XP Pro will work as long as they have the service pack 2 installed.

Has there been any discussion of when the full version will be released? I am just wondering because if I start using the Beta and it expires in Jan 07 and the full version isn't out yet, well that leaves us all stuck with a whole in our workflow. Any ideas?

Thought I would answer my own question... Here are two quotes from the Ligthroom FAQ on Adobe's site.

Q: When will Lightroom ship?
A: Our current intention is to ship a 1.0 version of Lightroom later this year, but
frankly, we’re not sure. We are seeking user input so we can be sure we’ve got it right.
Photographer workflows can be varied and complex, and we believe the best solution
can only be delivered after extensive input from pro photographers. So download,
install, and comment on Lightroom. We’ll ship it when you tell us it’s ready.

Q: When will this beta version of Adobe Lightroom expire?
A: Adobe Lightroom Beta 3 will expire on January 31, 2007. However, additional beta
versions with appropriate expiration dates will be released throughout the life of the
project, so that photographers who have come to rely on the beta version will not have
an interruption in their ability to use Lightroom.

I have the same problem as Guy. Cannot sign on even after resetting my password. It show that it is incorrect.

According to an email I got from Pixmantec, Adobe will, "Offer a free download version of Lightroom 1.0 for customers who bought RawShooter | premium prior to July 12th 2006, 12 noon European Standard Time. Given that Lightroom 1.0 will serve a much broader range of functionality and will be priced at a higher price point than RawShooter | premium, we believe this represents a great value for our customers."

The email announced that Pixmatec had been acquired by Adobe and that RawShooter Premium would be discontinued immediately, although the free Essentials version would continue to be available.

It didn't want to put any beta software on my Mac so I waited until the Windows version was available for download. I am pretty impressed, and had I not spent $300 on Aperture I would definitely consider it. Bridge clunks by comparison. I suspect it will be priced to compete with Aperture and provide a few more features. Seems to be your typical high-quality Adobe product...

How is everyone using Lightbox? As a digital image manager, an organiser how?

I had the same logon problem! Grrrr!

Does anyone know if Adoobie is addressing this issue?

Second question: Since I am an LF film person, will this program be of value to me?

Thanks!

I've played around with it a bit, and it seems like a potentially great program. But I can't believe how S...L...O...W it is.

I’m running a Dell with Windows XP SP2, P4 3GHz, 1GB RAM. With only Lightroom open, making a simple curve adjustment (just moving the slider a nudge) takes 4 sec to process (RAW or DNG). Yikes! PS CS2 runs lightning-fast (with Nikon Capture and iTunes open), so it’s not my machine. (I've also read similar complaints about the speed on other forums.)

Hopefully it will run faster in the “real” version. I can’t see buying LR in the future if it’s going to run this slow — any time savings in workflow will be swamped by processing time.

And hopefully the final version will read Photoshop files! All my master files are in PSD format, and thus inaccessible in LR! Isn’t that a hoot?!
