I wanted to open a discussion about having an autumn meeting for the Northeast Nature Photographers (NENP). Since we have had low turn out the last few time we have had them we skipped this spring and focused trying to set on up for Autumn 2006.
When we reviewed the past meetings we believe that many did not have the time to spend an entire weekend away for a photo meeting. Many of the venues we choose required a long enough drive that most people would not make a day trip out of it and they might not have had a diverse enough set of photo opportunities. This autumn we want to have a place that will be centrally located enough that people could make a day trip if they wished. We also wanted a more versatile location so we can have many different type of photo opportunities available.
I have the following proposal for an autumn meeting:
I will ask 3 or 4 people to lead groups for the above photo ops during the weekend. Littleton should be more accessible to people from VT, Boston area, Maine, and Upstate NY. Day trips should be more doable as well. I will investigate the accommodations and look for a location for the meeting and I ask that people share the following:
1) Which weekend we should have this, and
2) If you know of a particular spot or photo op in the area,
3) Thoughts in general about a weekend / meeting

Would love to attend an outing but I will be in Colorado 9/23-30. I'm also planning to do an art show in CT one weekend in October (not sure of date yet)...also Littleton is 7 hours from me. Maybe next time!
However, if anyone is near my area - the Finger Lakes region, feel free to visit www.fingerlakesphotographers.com We regularly try to schedule outings in the area.
I will mark that on my calender. It will be great to get everyone together. Definetly plan to partake in the weekend. Let me know if you need any help.
Last weekend in september is too early for the foliage. Last year the peaked late at the second weekend in October, which 'leaves' the first week as the traditional peak at the first weekend in the Notches, with leaf fall the second and third weekends.
If that turns out to be too early, just drive up north rt 3 to Pittsburg or over to 'the Kingdom' and you'll be sure to be 'golden' then!
From Littleton, you have some great options. Crawford and franconia notch are less than 20 minutes away, the Ammonuoosuc river runs right through this beautiful town, and there are some fantastic historical sights on main street. Three mountain ridges can be seen from the town, and you can't help seeing moose by driving north of Whitefield! My favorite places to shoot near there are the forest service roads that run along the western flank of Mount Washington. They have a very nice feel to them in the fall. If you drop behind the Kinsman Range, or cross into vermont, it has a very old New England feel with lots of small farms.
I think this is a great choice of location, and depending on the weekend, I'll be happy to guide some people around! Book a hotel or campground early though, it gets a lil busy during peeper season though!
I would love to do some of the streams and falls in this area and would be able to make it if it was the Oct 14/15, already have something going on with the other date.
When I proposed the two weekends I knew that as Jim S. has pointed out Sept might be a bit early, and the second weekend in Oct might be a slightly past peak. I was trying to avoid the 3 day Columbus Day weekend when the roads are cloged and the price of everything tends to be at a premium. It looks like there is a slight preference for the October weekend but I would like to get a more definitive idea, so I will post a topic where I will ask you to vote on one weekend or another.

I have a friend with 100+ acres and a Jurt (Big permanent tent) on it that easily sleep 4. If we do Littleton I can probably get it for those who are willing to camp

I have the following proposal for an autumn meeting:
Location: Littleton, NH
Date: weekend of Sept 30/ Oct 1 or Oct 14/15
Photo ops in the area:
* Foliage - (everywhere) Vt & NH
* Landscapes - VT & NH
* Streams - Franconia Notch
* Animals - Moose (NH & VT)
* Farms & building (NH & VT)

Sounds good to me. I think the weekend idea is an excellent one.
I'd vote for Sept. 30/Oct. 1 weekend.
Perhaps a scouting trip would be in order to take a look at the area?

Hope it work out for ya'll. Have fun!
Sounds great. I would think the first weekend in Oct would be best in that area. I personally would love to explore the Franconia Notch area.
