Can anyone recommend a 12 foot kayak for lakes that is stable for photography? I went to a demo at EMS and liked a Current Designs Kestrel more than a Pungo which did not track as well. In the middle was a Perception Arcadia, which was a high volume kayak - I liked the standard better - lower in the water.
Any thoughts would be appreciated as well as any sites that would allow me to compare models by different manuafacturers. AS I said I liked the Kestrel, but EMS has a lousy policy - no ordering in advance when none are in stock. If I want a special order one, they can do that, but I would not be able to use my 10% off coupon plus I would have to spend $60 to have it shipped to the store.
Have you considered the Old Town Predator series? They are a camoflage kayak designed for hunting and fishing and come in three different lengths, 11-foot, 13-8 and 14-feet.
I have been using a Predator 11 foot model for a year now and have been very happy with it.
It tracks reasonably well and handles well in tight spots. It comes with an anchor that attaches to a pully system, a nylon cover that goes over the front of the cockpit and has pockets for storage, and a foam base that attaches to the bottom of the kayak. The foam base is meant to hold shotgun shells and water bottles/thermos, but I found it works well as a place to set a bag containing my camera gear.
I have another 12-foot Old Town and I find the Predator to be the stabler of the two.
