just returned from my trip to Vancouver, BC, and while it was an amazing trip my D70s took a nose dive and died on me.... apparently it has a blown fuse.
while speaking with the shop i purchased it from it was mentioned that this is shaping up to be an issue with the D70/D70s make...
just wondering if anyone else has had this happen, and if nikon has admitted there is an issue...
luckily my father had his D70 & F100 so i was able to use the D70.... especially lucky considering it died on day 1! yikes!
My D70s is at Nikon at this time Bryce... it did not die on me, but it appeared the shutter stopped working... all image shot would only show the top 1/10th of the image...
my camera arrived at Nikon a week ago today, yet I have not any word to what the problem was or when I can be expecting it back... I also have a D70 for backup but it has had a few issues itself as of the last couple of months... I think it needs a good cleaning & once over... the shutter release button doesn' work as it should, almost like it sticks & the camera is not reading it... not sure, am not very techno on this end... so think the D70 will be going in after I get my D70s back...
do let us know what you find out about your camera...
& do remember that camera shops on a whole (not saying all) will give you a bad take on a model when something goes wrong, they are hoping they can sell you the next model up as an upgrade(assuring you that you problem will then be taken care of)... heheeheee
I had a problem with mine (D70). It died when I was using it in very cold weather, and I thought that was the problem. It may have been, I'm still not sure. I called Nikon, they were very helpful. He said "I think I know what's wrong with it, and we can fix it at no charge." I shipped it out and got it back promptly, no charge, with new firmware installed. I still don't know what was wrong with it. It was out of warranty, so I was glad to have it fixed for free, but a little unsure of why they never said what was wrong. Good luck with it.
Sorry to hear about it crapping out on you. I don't know how long you'll be without it, or if you'll be able to keep your father's until you get it back, but I have an F4s & an F4e that I no longer use - you're welcome to borrow either until you get yours back if that'll help you out. Sorry, don't have an extra digital. Just say the word - they're both just sitting in the closet gathering dust.

Bryce,
I dont have the D70 but my D50 is in the shop as well...........Just count yourself lucky you can get a backup.....I cant
Jill,
I was told that Nikon doesnt give any word on repairs for at least 2 weeks..........Now thats Nikon Canada mind you, but the average turn around these days for Nikon Canada is about 3 weeks.
thanks for the offer Bill! i've actually got a FM10 sitting here at the house, so i'll probably be using that on the 4th for fireworks... yeah, i havent received word on what the problem is and when i can expect it back... luckily its still under warranty for another 2 months...
I've had my D70s repaired twice. Something called the intermediate power converter went the first time and the built-in flash went out the second time. The first repair, they misplaced it for a week and then overnighted it back to me, so it was gone for about 2 1/2 weeks. The second time it was out for less than 10 days total. Really I've been happy with the service. The keep you informed on the status of your camera on the website and you can message them there and they answer very quickly.
well, i've been informed that my d70s is on its way back to me now... blown fuse was the culprit... it actually never went back to nikon... the shop i purchased from fixed it for me... so i saved a little time, and probably some $$... just thought i'd update everyone. thanks for all the replies.
I'd be alert for the problem to recur. As with all things electrical, there may be a culprit lurking behind the blown fuse. It's in there to protect the circuitry from damage, but replacing it might not address the root cause. I.e., it could happen again, as usual at the worst possible moment. A trip to the Nikon repair station might still be required at some point.
