I spent the last three days out on Hilton Head Island, SC. The place sucks for photography - just letting you all know that in case you are considering it for a vacation destination. I was doing a small assignment there. One morning, I woke up well before sunrise and drove away from the island toward the intercoastal waterway, looking for something....ANYTHING!

Right along one of the roads I took was a small tidal pool with 70 - 80 wading birds in it. Great Egrets, snowy egrets, cattle egrets, green herons, blue herons - you name it. The main area of birds was way too chaotic with wings flapping, moving, feeding. It was still predawn and I didnt have enough shutter speed to deal with it, so I found these three off to the side and worked it with my 300mm f/4 lens. The sky was pastel pink and the sun was just coming up when I took this pic. I liked the posture of the three and the soft light. I wish I could have gotten the one on the right a little closer to the other two, but.....oh well, maybe one day when I have time in PS. Kidding!

I like the colors and the reflections. My inlaws have a house at Hilton Head. We used to go all the time, but haven't been in quite awhile. It's really grown up, lots of traffic. 20 years ago when they first built the house there were probably lots of good places. Too bad it's so congested now, it is (was?) a wonderful place.

Richard, I love the color fade in the background which help make the shot less static than just three birds. Very neat shot!

Richard,

Really nice shot. Are you sure you didn't shoot this in Florida?

Richard, I agree that this is an beautiful shot. The light is perfect. I like the bird on the right a little farther away. I don't think I'd like it as well with it closer to the other two. It looks great!
