Weird metadata problem Mac OSX & CS2/Bridge. Help!

Having a really confusing experience trying to append metadata to image files on my computers, both running Mac OSX 10.3.9., and using PhotoShop CS2

I have images that have some data added in iView. I want to add some further info, to the files so create a template that contains the data. I add it in iView. I then 'Sync to original file' from iView and it should write the data to the original file. However it will not append data to some of the fields. I thought this might be another iView bug.

SO I opened Bridge and created a metadata template there. However trying to highlight ALL the images and append the metadata to multiple images would not work.

Now for the peculiar bit. If I view all the images I am working with in the one Bridge view (ie viewing the contents of the entire folder) I can highlight a single image and go to File>File Info and use the template, add the data, and it appears where I want it, and then I close, clicking OK. Job done. If I reopen the Info box again the data is still there.

However if I open the original file by double-clicking on it, open File>File Info, the metadata changes have not been effected. I go back and check in the Bridge folder view of all files and select/highlight the image and check File Info and the changes HAVE been effected. It appears there are two separate metadata files appended to each image, and accessed in different ways.

So I am being forced to open each file individually to manually add the data using the template in the File Info box to ensure the data is added correctly. This is a royal pain.

Question: why does the metadata accessed via the File Info drop down in the folder view differ from that seen in the File Info box accessed from within the original file? Anyone experienced this? Am I missing some syncing function in Bridge? I've read the manual and nothing explains this.

I haven't tried what you're doing John, but I have run into bugs between Mac and Bridge/SC2. Significantly there's a warning from Adobe that you need Mac OSX 10.4 or higher for full functionality, and our two machines that experience problems have older OSX versions for a variety of reasons. Our two other machines using latest versions of OSX 10.4 work flawlessly with Bridge/CS2 for everything we've tried. Basically if I'm having troubles on a machine without 10.4, I move to one with 10.4 and the problems go away.

Any chance your OSX 10.3.9 is the root problem?

Thanks Hank - you could be right. I've had a lot of problems with iView and metadata functions, some of them pretty fundamental problems that seriously affect the functionality of the iView software, and the techs have attributed some of them to incompatibilities with 10.3.9 and although they've suggested upgrading to 10.4 as an instant fix, they do admit that in their testing on 10.3.9 they somehow missed the problems I am experiencing. Seems some of the ways that Adobe implement their metadata functions creates headaches for other software - could be I'm suffering from that problem.

However taking iView out of the equation and simply comparing the metadata from the different access methods in CS2, and finding it to be different does point to something else, and your suggestion could be correct. I'll see what other suggestions this post elicits, and if nothing clarifies/remedies it I'll be upgrading to 10.4.

Thanks for your advice.

I'd highly recommend surfing over to the Bridge forum on the Adobe site and asking there. You may not even need to ask the question, you can probably find the answer with a quick search.
Iview also has user to user forums. Chances are you'll find more people there using the same combination of apps you're using so you might come up with more solutions.
