When I go to 'about->NPN' I find that naturephotographers.net has been bought out by naturephtographers.network.

From the new site this site can be reached through their 'Archive' menu at the top.

It looks as though there is some porting of material from the old NPN to the new NPN. Does anyone know how much will be transported?

How long will the old NPN remain active before they pull the plug?

I have tried to log in to the new site assuming that my account was still valid in the new site but can't seem to sign in. Are our accounts no longer valid now that NPN has been bought out?

Igor, news to me. But I did look and found this information. Like you I tried to sign in but it did not accept the log in. So, seems to be still in a transition state and announcements to come I assume.......wink <div>  <div> <div> <div> <div> <div>

Today NPN is run by David Kingham along with his partner Jennifer Renwick. David took over the site in 2018 with a vision to reignite the spirit of NPN. David was a member for many years, it helped his growth in photography, and he met many of his friends through the forums. David was distraught seeing the community of NPN slipping away and felt it was time to reinvent the site.

Although David now owns NPN he recognizes the site is not his, it is here for the community. Without the amazing contributors and members, NPN would be nothing. David did not take over to promote himself, he genuinely wants to foster the community of nature photographers.

Hey guys,

You found this a day too soon! Jim will be making the official announcement tomorrow and I will be sending out your new login info tomorrow as well.

Don't worry, the old site will always remain as an archive as it is, you just won't be able to post here anymore.

Exciting times ahead! I'm sure you all have a ton of questions, if you have a little patience you will get all the answers tomorrow. :)

I suggest watching this video as an introduction to the new website:

Wow, this is huge news (well, huge as far as NPN goes...)  I'm guessing that it may have been better to make the announcement before starting to port pages... but that's hind sight at this point.

We'll look for Jim's announcement.

Who ever thought anyone looked at that About page any more? wink

I will repost this message in a separate thread but this is as good a place to compose it as any;

They say one year in a dog's life is equal to seven in a human's life.  If that is true, I have to think the ratio may be even greater in the life of an Internet community.  It's been over 18 years since NPN was launched, and back in 2000 it was a unique resource for nature photographers.  No one had heard of an iPhone back then, and Mark Zuckerberg was only 15 years old.  How times have changed...

Over the years I have to believe that NPN has had a positive impact on nature photography, and on those who have spent time here pursuing their hobby or profession.  The quality of participation to this day remains the overwhelming reason for NPN's success, and it has been the moderators and members who have made it as good as it is.  Our mission statement of dedicated to the art and technique of nature photography along with some simple ground rules of keeping all discussion focused 100% on that mission statement, and cultivating an atmosphere of respect and professionalism seemed a pretty logical approach 18 years ago and remains the foundation on which NPN has thrived.  Who ever thought that social discourse would have devolved to where it is today, making the way we interact here an exception instead of the simple rule of common courtesy?  How times have changed...

As the years passed it became increasing obvious to Donna and me that our level of enthusiasm for running NPN was dwindling.  Children who were in high school when we launched NPN are now grown adults with careers and children of their own.  Canine family members have come and gone, hair has grown gray and my employment has relocated us to a different state.  The simple HTML coding and bulletin board systems of 2000 have given way to far more advanced and efficient methods of building websites.  We soon found our simple home-brew website competing with sites that were created with hundreds-of-thousands of dollars in venture capital and a team of coding professionals. Times had changed, and it became obvious that without some fresh ideas and enthusiasm that NPN would remain in a long, gradual decline.  It would have been easy to just pull the plug but there was far too much invested by all of us to let that happen.

A few months ago David Kingham reached out to me to discuss the current state of NPN, and to ask if we might be interested in an offer of acquisition.  Through our conversations it became evident that David not only shared the core values of what has made NPN the success it has been, but also a vision of where NPN could go from here.  It was through these conversations that I realized this was the opportunity I was hoping for - finding someone who values NPN as much as I do and who would be willing to pour their heart, soul and energy into it.  It became clear to me that NPN would be given a new lease on life and be able to continue its mission of dedicated to the art and technique of nature photography with the core values of respect, professionalism and unbending focus on the craft we love - with none of the divisiveness that infests our society. Times have changed, and the time to make a change for the future of NPN was clear.

I have been honored and humbled to have been associated with such an outstanding group of people, with photography skills that have often left me awe. Your dedication to not only the craft, but your professionalism, decency, common courtesy, and most of all, your passion for sharing your images of our natural world with those of us lucky enough to witness them I consider the greatest opportunity of my life.  To all of you, my heartfelt thanks for allowing Donna and I to be a part of it!

It is with great excitement that we hand over the ownership of NPN responsibilities to David, knowing that NPN will live on and remain the great nature photography resource it has long been.  We also look forward to remaining participants on the new NPN website and continue enjoying the outstanding nature photography that we have been blessed with witnessing for all of these years.

We are pleased and eternally grateful to know that the best days of NPN are still ahead - see you there!

Question, will those of us who have life time memberships still have those honored?
Posted by Igor Doncov on August 30, 2018 at 2:07 PM
I have many questions myself, Mia, but I'm getting the impression that we'll be asking them in the discussion section of the new website. There is the question of which, if any, of our images will be ported from the old NPN to the new NPN.

All current memberships will be honored, including lifetime. Thanks again to all for your support - we look forward to your continuing participation!

Igor,

I asked this very question of Dave a couple of days ago. Here is his answer:

No, the existing posts will not be ported over, the complications of this are massive. But, the old site will remain accessible as it is in perpetuity, we will just turn off the ability to post soon.

I am sure that Dave will let us know which functionality will be retained, and what will go away, given the differences in the platforms.

Preston, or anyone else,

Does the new NPN still support the concept of a personal gallery?

If not, then how long do images stay on the website before they age out?

Does the new NPN still support the concept of a personal gallery?

No, Igor. It is not possible on the new platform.

If not, then how long do images stay on the website before they age out?

I am not sure, but I believe they do not 'time out'. David would have to answer that one.

As Preston said, the new site will not have galleries, the existing galleries will stay around forever but as an archive, you will not be able to add any new photos to it.
