I just posted a shot in Avian of 2 flying swallows. It's an awkward crop, since they are a little too far apart.I'd like to go to a horizontal crop and cut out a piece of the plain sky between them.

How do I do that? I know it's possible.

What is this technique called, and what tool is ued - so I can look up a tutorial.

Thanks!

Sandy:

I just gave this a quick try using Content Aware Scaling.  Made a rectangular selection of the top part of the image to just below the top bird. Saved that Selection.  Then used Content Aware Scaling, set the Protect option to the name of the saved selection you just created.  Scale by pulling the bottom of the image up and the top won't move since it is protected.

Then cropped the whole thing to more of a square, then added canvas left and right using Content Aware Cropping.  Came up with this in about 2 minutes.

Sandy, I was thinking along the similar lines as Keith with using the CA command.
As another thought you might select the bird at the top then copy and free transform it to where you want it. Then merely clone or CA the sky area over the old spot or bird location. I've not tested your seen but have used free transform on other objects in the past. Just a thought.

Thanks - Keith,   that's just what I wanted to end up with!

I have plenty of room , though, so don't need to add canvas right and left.

Will give it a shot!

Isn't there also some kind of "slice" tool that slices a piece like this out of an image?

Yes there is.  It's content aware scale as already alluded to.  For tutorials do searches on that and also the patch and move tools.  They might be fast and easy with a clean sky.
