Memory Cards

I ran across some interesting articles recently on what's going on in the memory card industry.  They seem to explain why there's a shortage of high capacity Compact Flash cards adn may explain why some new camera models might be delayed.

Apparently the move to super high resolution video (8K) is driving the memory card industry to find "better" systems.  CFast and XQD were the initial forays into that realm, but the Compact Flash Association realized last year that the CFast was not going to be capable of reaching the kind of speeds they would need in the future.  They then came out with a new standard called CFExpress.  Some ex-Lexar executives started a new company called ProGrade Digital and they have demonstrated a 1TB card with 1.4 GB/s read speeds.  The form factor is the same as the XQD and a software change to the Nikon and other cameras using the XQD will allow use of the CFExpress.  This basically spells the end of the CFast card.  I suspect in the not too distant future that it will also spell the demise of the old CF and SD cards.
