The D850's take the XQD cards rather than the CF cards, (of which I now have a million useless ones.)
The XQD cards have a very disturbing habit that I hope I can somehow bypass. Any ideas, anyone?
With the CF cards, when I deleted images in the field, any new images taken appeared at the end of the images already there. All my groups of images stayed intact.
With the XQD cards, the spaces in sequence where an image was deleted, are filled in by later images.
So I have 15 shots of Sedona rocks from 3 weeks ago, then one image of 50 of a goldfinch today , then more Sedona, and all the other birds from today are dispersed through the older images. Sometimes I have 1500 images on a card at a time (I know, I know, I need to download them sooner...)
This is crazy-making, when I'm trying to decide which of 15 similar shots I'll keep and have to go back and forth among the 1500 images. .
Any suggestions from the wealth of knowledge here?
Thanks -
Sandy

I have no experience with this, Sandy, but I'd look in the image review options on the D850. Hopefully there's a sort preference you can set.

Sandy,
I have the same issue with my XQD cards. Yes, it is annoying. If you get in the habit of waiting until you get to your computer to cull your shots, you will not have the problem. Everything will show up in order. I use XQD on my D 500 & D 850. I have one 32 GB & one 64 GB card that I alternate. I have never even come close to filling one card. I download each card the day I use it and reformat after it is downloaded. I keep a 128 GB SD card in the 2nd slot as backup, review it as necessary, and reformat the SD card after I am satisfied there is nothing I want on it. There is no setting on either camera that alters this behavior as far as I know.
Sandy, since there is no 'in-camera' option for 'sort order' either by file name or date/time, you are stuck with having to download your images so that they will sort properly in your image management app.
From a workflow standpoint, I find it difficult to cull in-camera because the image on the screen is so small. Also, if you download on a regular basis, your image management app will perform faster because there are fewer thumbnails and database entries to create.
