I just received a request to use one of my photos for the book cover.  It's from a first time novelist from Romania.  While it's possible this is a scam, it's also possible that it's legit.  Does anyone have suggestions as to pricing?  I assume that terms would be use only the book cover and any reprints of the book.

Thanks,
Mark

Mark, I guess the first thing to make sure is if the group or person is legitimate. Not sure how you can do that with the novelist being in Romania. I would have thought some other folks here on NPN would have possibly provided for a book cover and would be able to supply a number, but maybe not.

The Fotoquote software at about $140 would provide a good idea. But heck that's already $140 spent to find out what might be a good price. Can't say I have any book cover usages yet, but had another one recently for a magazine one time usage for $250.

Good luck and congratulations at least on the contact having been made and hopefully it is a solid lead no matter what the net $$$ are in the end.....devil

Mark please be careful, I have gotten Romania inquiries for rental property advertised on the internet, which turned out bogus. I was not fooled when they were willing to pay double what the asking price was. The word Romania got my attention. I certainly would want one of your photographs on my book had I written one so that part is believable.  Guess a little research would be my suggestion. Romania and first time novelist are giving me pause for caution.

Please let us know how this turns out.

Might be a scan or not. I was contacted early last year by a photo editor/agent for a German magazine re use of one of my images in their publication. They offered $350 for one time use, for whatever that is worth in trying to price a book cover. I thought it might be a scam, and was real nervous when I was asked to provide some info re my bank account. However, the agent seemed legit, and I was assured by my bank that the wiring process was standard. I provided the image and about 3 months later, after publication, the money was wired to my account.

For a first time novelist, I would personally think $250 would seem reasonable.

By the way, Mark, the magazine photo agent saw my image here at NPN, which is how I got the sale. It had received a WP in Macro. Thanks!

Scott, guess the fact that your shot got a Macro WP means that I should get a cut...sad.

I responded asking for more detail, like number of copies, publisher and if there would be advertising posters made using it.  So far (24 hours), no response.  Yes, the idea that it might be a scam was my first thought...

Yes, Mark, except that I do not want to create any dangerous precedents.  enlightened
