Firewire to USB

I have a Nikon coolscan 4000 but it requires a firewire connection which my computer does not have.  Is there a Firewire to USB converter that would work?

Skip, just a quick look at Amazon and there were all kinds of reasonably priced cables and adapters out there for Firewire to USB.....cool

Paul and Skip,

An adapter cable should work, but be advised that speed will suffer. Skip, you might look on Amazon or New Egg for a compatible PCI FireWire 400 (IEEE 1394) controller card. This assumes you have an open PCI slot on your motherboard.

Just a quick note: When asking for hardware suggestions, it is very helpful when we know some basic info about your machine, such as:

Desktop or Laptop
Make and Model
CPU
Amount of RAM
Video Card or Onboard Graphics
OS and Version.

See this thread for more.

Yes, that is very true and should be considered. I use a flatbed unit for MF & LF through USB and with resulting 8 or 4 pass scans respectively it can take a bit of time.

Skip, been there done that, and it didn't work.  My suggestion is to discuss what you are trying to do with a good computer repair person.  I tried using an adapter to go from the 6-pin 1934 Firewire to USB.  Unfortunately, there is a major voltage difference between the Coolscan and USB.  The adapter became very hot and I may have damaged the scanner.  A repair tech is working on it now but it doesn't look good. .Also, don't expect any help from Nikon.

Please let me know if you are successful.

Don's caution is is a great one. PCIe Firewire controller cards are inexpensive.and will get the job done without loss of speed or voltage issues.

Here's a Vantec card from NewEgg: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815287010 $21.99

Be sure the card yuo buy is compatible, and also be sure to install the latest driver from the manufacturer's website.
