If you post asking for suggestions for a gear purchase, I believe it will be helpful if the original poster adds a reply stating the details of what piece they purchased, along with a short gear review.
I believe such information can be a nice guide for members looking for a similar piece of gear.
Preston, a really good point. However, I've always noticed one item about forum responses of becoming automatically archived over time. They just scroll out of site and out of mind.
Basically, what is needed is an automatic "pop-to-top" when a response is made. That way if it takes a couple weeks for an update to happen it will become "refreshed" to the surface for a renewal of thoughts and or comments. As it is now the normal progression of ANY forum post is that it scrolls out of view fairly quickly.
For those items never receiving any updated comments they would merely follow a normal path out of view.

I can see the benefits of this for equipment discussions, but please don't activate this for image critique! That's would take us back to an undesirable time when people would game the system to keep their own images (or those of close friends) at the top of the page with gratuitous comments so those individuals could dominate the forum.
Richard, I totally agree. To clarify my original posted comment it is ONLY forums, not anything to do with galleries and image critiques of any sort. I work on some other sites that keep the forum discussions "alive" by popping them to the top whenever there is a response made. Over time if it is not kept current it just scrolls off the page. ...

Paul, the replies to NPN discussion forum posts are sorted by the date and time of the most recent reply if you set that option "Preferences". In doing so, the thread in question 'pops to the top'. One can also set the sort order to 'Post date"
The image posts in the Critique Galleries can be sorted by the date and time of the original post ("Post Date"). The result being that any replies do not result in any movement of the image thread in the sort order. One can also set the image post to, "Last comment date". Note that these are 'preferences' you set for yourself only.
Back in the day, that Richard is talking about, NPN used vBulletin software which always posted the latest reply/comment at the top. Therefore, it was very easy for some users to game the critique system by adding a reply such as, "Back to the top". The new software prevents this, fortunately.
Please let me kow if I have addressed your suggestion, which is a good one.

Preston, thank you for that input. I'm sure most would not know about those options and where they can be toggled. I've set my forum preference for now to "Last Comment Date". Being use to the old way for so long I'll see how this works for now. I think there is truly an advantage to this sort method for forum items. At least for me anyway. The example you mentioned earlier about gear follow up information brought to mind many times wondering how someone did with an item when they actually tried it in the field.
