I need some technical assistance please. I have a Canon 7DMKII and would like to know if the Canon 100 – 400 II will work with the 2 X III adapter in AF mode. I know that the 1.4 III will work.

Thank you again for your very much appreciated assistance. This is one outstanding group with endless talent.

Hi Richard,  The 100-400 II will work with the 7D2 and the 1.4 X TC but not the 2 X TC.  At 400 the 100-400 is F/5.6.  Adding the 1.4 TC will reduce this to f/8.  The 7D2 will AF at f/8 but not slower.  The 2 X TC will reduce the combination to one stop less than f/8 so only manual focus will work.  FWIW, the 100-400 and the 1.4 TC work very well together.  The number of pixels you have available allows you to crop and produce a better image than you would get using a 2 X TC.  I have given up using the 2 X TC on any lens with the newer high MP bodies.

Ed,

I thought this was the case but was not sure if f/8 was the majic number with the 7DMKII also. Canon use to have a lens guide on their website that would tell you all the compatibility info but can no longer find if there.

Thank you for the info and advice.
