Many of the Osprey with fish images I see posted here and elsewhere show the bird with good sized prey. It certainly does make for a better and more impressive image than a 6" fish... What I have observed over several years here in Puget Sound doesn't seem to follow that pattern. While I am aware there are larger fish in the water because I have seen them jump, the Osprey seem to catch only small Sculpin and small flatfish. They do seem to catch and eat several fish before they return to their nesting area. Since I have not had an opportunity to observe Osprey in other environments, is this behavior more normal, meaning do they catch small fish most of the time?
David, I think Ospreys in Florida usually catch bigger fish. They usually take the fish to the top of a dead tree or pole and have trouble keeping the fish up there while they eat it. Here's one image that I cropped like this so you could see the fish. Actually, I don't know how big the fish is, because I'm not good with measurements. I think I can find a couple of other images, though, to kind of verify.
Hi David, this shot is from Titlow Park in Tacoma, WA. There is a tidal lake from Puget Sound there. When I lived in Washington I photographed these guys taking good sized Starry Flounder at that location a few times. I have also photographed them taking good sized fish in both Oregon, Florida and Texas. I think they will take whatever is available in the area they are fishing in, although outside of Puget Sound I have more often seen them with good sized fish than small ones.
