I plan to backup my files to DVDs. My directory with images is larger than 4.7GB. Is there any way to automatically slice this directory and write the data-files to multiple DVDs?

Not sure about other products, but CD/DVD Creator from Roxio will do it automatically.

If you use Windows, Archive Creator will do this. It also places an index page for an entire archive on each disk of that archive. For instance, if you were archiving 3 disks worth of one shoot, each disk will have an index page (web browser page) that contains a thumbnail of all images on all three disks.

One thing to add is that if you're creating a multi-volume backup, each of these volumes potentially becomes a single point of failure (although in the case of CD Creator the files that are not split are stored as-is so some recovery is still possible). I think it's well worth taking the time to break up your images into directories/categories/whatever that are smaller than 4.7GB and back them up individually.
Making a second backup is also a good idea. DVDs are not the most reliable media.

Use Delkin archival DVDs and Archive Creator. It's a great program. Much better than CD creator because CD creator SPLITS files across DVDs (ick!!). The index page helps a lot for finding files. You can keep a MASTER index on your hard drive to help find photos on specific DVD's as well as the DVD index itself. Each DVD is its own entity, unlike CD creator, etc. where if one fails, watch out...

Thanks Guy! It is not going to be that difficult to it MANUALLY. I will go that route.
