My seven and ten year old grandsons have expressed an interest in photography. The seven year old constantly walked around with my old Canon G12 while we were on vacation and is very enthused.
I would like to get a camera for each of them for their birthday or Christmas. I know taking care of the equipment is an issue and having something that will maintain their interest is too.
I definitely would consider a used camera and brand does not matter at this point.
What do you recommend and where is a good place to buy? Please let me know what you think.
My inclination would be to go with a good point and shoot. This should give enough variability in choosing focal lengths, shutter speeds, and apertures to find out if their interest holds. If after a year or two they want a better camera, then go to an SLR. If you want to go used, I've purchased from KEH in Atlanta a number of times and always been pleased.
I have given my kids a Canon ELPH. Easy to carry. Did they take up photography...... No. I mostly get pics from their smart phones.

Another option is an old DSLR camera with a 50mm lens. Cameras go obsolete so fast that anything older than five years ends up on ebay for a song...

Brian: Should you decide to go with a used DSLR and can figure out what make/model makes sense, you might post a want on here. Many of us upgrade pretty regularly and while we might keep the previous generation as a backup, the generation before that just gathers dust.
