My wife and I are going to reprise a trip to Jasper and Banff the first two weeks of September. Its been seven years since our first and only trip and I'm looking to maximize our experience. Is there likely to be much fall color that early and if so where are the best opportunities? Is the Elk rut likely to have started and are there preferred locations for that? We're both old enough that 10 mile hikes are in our history books but we can still get around pretty well and can handle shorter day hikes. Any and all suggestions are most welcome. Thanks in advance. >=))>

We went through Jasper and Banff about that time a few years back. For elk the town of Jasper area, along the river East of Jasper and the road down into Maligne Lake area seemed to be really good. Sorry I can't help much on fall foliage. Aspen groves would be turning about then. One of my favorite areas is Lake Edith Cavell. There is a bit of a climb up into the meadows after the Angel and Cavell Glaciers. The view down the valley from the glaciers is outstanding though, as is the view/reflection from the lower end of the lake if you get there early. No matter where you go up there, it is one of the most beautiful areas of the world in my opinion.
