How do you include metadata when submitting images by e-mail?

I'm not sure I understand the question.

You can keep the metadata in the image itself, which is what I always try to do when posting to the NPN or my web site or blog. Whatever info the camera writes into the original file stays with the image unless you do something to strip it out. Photoshop's Save for Web used to do this to make the jpeg as small as possible.

If you are asking about providing shooting info with an image submitted to someone else (such as magazine or contest) then you could simply attach a text file with the information. There are various utilities that will read the metadata in an image file for you and allow you to export that to a text file.

EXIFTool ExifTool is a platform-independent Perl library plus a command-line application for reading, writing and editing meta information in a wide variety of files. The linked page is very detailed. As far as I can tell, this is 'freeware'.

John

Canon's image processing software that came with your camera also allows you to copy the metadata.
