I recently spent 3 1/2 weeks driving 6,250 miles from DC to Colorado, Utah, and Arizona. I made several stops along the way, but the most memorable was at Cape Royal on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. I made this image of Motan's Throne using a 24mm TS-E on a Canon 6D. I would 've liked to have gotten more on the right side, but anyone who's been to Cape Royal knows that Pinyon pines pretty much limit camera angles at Cape Royal.
Sounds like a great road trip, Howard! What do you think of cropping some of the bottom? It's not that interesting of a foreground & will both balance out the shortened right framing and emphasize the longitudinal nature of the formation. Was there a fire somewhere to the south? The skies look a bit smudgy.
Cape Royal maybe the best view in the park. Looks to be some serious haloing along the top of Wotan's Throne. Nice afternoon light on the face of Wotan.
Monica, there had been a lightning-caused fire between Flagstaff and the Canyon.
Monika, feel free to demonstrate what you have in mind on the cropping. I'm not sure of how much you think should be cropped out.
Doug, that "haloing" is present in the CR2 original, and not the result of any post-processing. I did hear from a park ranger that the air above and in the Canyon that day was more obscured than usual, perhaps because of that fire you mentioned. Frankly, I found that explanation somewhat difficult to comprehend. I took that shot on the 3rd day of my visit there and on the 2nd day, the wind was very strong and quite gusty. I would've thought that would've cleared the air.
BTW, I have a couple of other images also made at or near Cape Royal that I'll be posting.

Howard, It'll be a little hard to describe (I don't think I can download your image to crop & re-post), but I'll try. On the foreground element, which curves from right to left, on the left side there's a little "pinnacle" capped in white/grey on top of orange. It sticks out left & down a level from the main formation. Try cropping somewhere around there. You'll still have the curving leading line coming out of the bottom right of the frame if you want, or maybe even just the highest part of it pointing to your main element, the Throne. All subjective, of course, depending on what's most pleasing to your eye.
