Windows 10 Hacks?

Hi Folks,
I finally got my new laptop. I ended up not getting the Acer and going with a Lenovo X1 Yoga instead.  I liked the size, the built-in wacom tablet function, and the screen is better than my old one and will be better still once calibrated.

It just has one problems: Windows 10   angry

I'm trying to figure out what that silly Photos app does, whether it is creating copies or simply creating virtual links to existing files.  I really have no use for it, but I don't know whether I can just unpin it and ignore it, or whether I should root it out and toss it to be safe.

Any thoughts?

Marylynne,

Congratulations on the new laptop!

I don't use the Photos app, either. Instead, I have images open in Photo Shop. For you, just unpin the Photos App from Start. That is what I did--quick and easy.

You can set the default application to use with images by going to Settings>System>Default Apps.
*In the Default Apps page click on "Choose default apps by file type." Let's say you want jpg files to open in Photo Shop.
*Scroll down and find jpg.
*In the right column, click the "Choose a default" icon. From the list that appears, select Adobe Photoshop.
*Close Settings. Now, jpg files will open in PS. A similar procedure is used if you want them to open in, say, Lightroom.

Hi Marylynne!

I like having a photo viewer to look at photos and other images without the overhead of PhotoShop, But the Photo App in Windows 10 is definitely not my favorite.  I liked the Photo Viewer app in Windows 7 and 8 much better.  It has better color management and is easier to use.  If you upgraded to Windows 10, the old Photo Viewer app was hidden but it's still there.  It's also available with a new install, but in both cases it makes you jump through a couple hoops.  Here's information on how to make Photo Viewer available and make it your default app - http://www.howtogeek.com/225844/how-to-make-windows-photo-viewer-your-default-image-viewer-on-windows-10/

Steve,

Thanks for pointing us to the How-To Geek article. That should work well for Marylynne.

I upgraded my machines from Win 7 and can confirm that Windows Photo Viewer is available under "Open with..." context menu.

Marylynne will need to use the .reg file as stated in the HTG article, since she has an OEM install of Win 10.

btw, Marylynne: HTG has a large number of "How-To's" for tweaking Win 10. I have used quite a few of them, and since then Win 10 is happily doing what I need it to do.

Marylynne, were you able to get Win 10 tweaked so that it plays nice?

Sorry for the slow response on this.  I'm not getting email notifications.  I have tweaked Windows 10 perfectly and I'm really happy with it.  No problems with printers or back up network drives either. It took a food week to get everything  the way I want it, but I also went ahead and got the LR and PS CC versions, so there was a little bit of work to get all the plugins functioning, etc.

And  I don't use the Photo app, just use LR in full screen mode so I can filter, etc.  I mostly use the old school desktop interface and I created a desktop icon for the old control panel.

I'm going to have some fun with the wacom tablet function of the Yoga. I got Bamboo and can use this to create screencast whiteboard videos for my classes.  I teach English at a community college as my day job.

Thanks for asking, and thanks too on the support during the purchase decision process.
