Hi Guys,

I want to insure my camera gear and would like to get recommendations of good companies to insure my gear with.

I haven't done this ever before, so I would like to also know what your suggestions on deductible, coverage amount, etc are. Please also let me know if there are other factors to consider.

Thanks!

If you're only looking for gear coverage, then you should ask your insurance agent whether they provide Inland Marine policies.  Some companies do, others don't.

If you need additional coverage, such as liability insurance, then consider contacting a company like TCP.  Their policies are more expensive than basic gear coverage, but they automatically include things like liability coverage for wider protection.

Allstate was able to give me an endorsement to my homeowner's policy for a nearly reasonable add-on premium. This isn't a recommendation; just an observation.

Mine is covered under my homeowners insurance.  If you're not a pro, this is a good option.  I didn't have an add-on premium.  When all of my gear was stolen, they were (I thought) quite fast with the process.  Fortunately, there were manufacturer rebates at the time, as well as B&H credits, so I ended with out-of-pocket expenses of around $1k for a pro body and a handful of L-series lenses.  There was a deductible & depreciation.  I don't know how photography-specific plans compare.  Another thing that was helpful, is that I had all of my gear registered with the manufacturer as well as a complete listing in my own documents so I was able to give serial numbers to the police that day as well as value as it was all in the Cloud.

Thanks for the ideas guys. My renters policy didn't let me add these in which is why I'm debating about camera specific insurance. If  I were to go that route (say TCP or something like that), how much does the monthly premium come up to?

Sairam,

The insurance premium you pay depends upon the total of the replacement value of the equipment you want to insure. You may have to provide proof of the replacement cost for each item, but this in not true of all underwriters.
