Hello Rocky Mountain Nature Photographers:

My wife and I are considering a trip in a couple of weeks to the Santa Rita Mountains. Do you have any ideas on what to expect this year for water conditions and do you have any suggestions on locations to visit for birding or for insects? We stayed at the lodge a few years back when it was bone dry about the same time of year. The hummers were busy at the feeders near the lodge, and there was good birding along the creeks. We even got to see the Elegant Trogon once. Thanks for your thoughts and suggestions.

The two areas I can think of are Madera Canyon, and Sonoita Creek below Patagonia lake.  I might think May would be a little late in the season and warm.

Great trip!!! Madera Canyon was a lot of fun. We saw the Elegant Trogon, Magnificent, Broadbilled and Black-chinned H-birds, Varied Buntings, and an Elf Owl there, among many others. Ended up going over to Cave Creek Canyon too, not much happening over there right now. Maybe too short of a trip, maybe wrong place, South Fork, hard to say. Great relaxing weekend.

I was once in the Huachuca Mtns looking for Goulds turkey.  We saw and heard one of the Elegant trogons. Beautiful, colorful bird. Did you get a good image to post?

Here is the best I could get of the Elegant Trogon in Madera Canyon. One of two, back, and front in next post.

Thanks Ed.  beautiful bird.  The one I saw was over a hundred yards away and just a small speck of color in the binos.
