Good day, we are planning a trip to the coast this coming May, which will be a honeymoon for us. I am interested in a location to observe and photograph seals, sea lions, otters, whales and what ever else possible. Originally we were going to go to San Diego but I am realizing this is probably not the place to be for the above.

Any suggestions for the above and any other sea life or wildlife would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Rich Hahn

Hi Rich,
Big Sur and north through Monterey Bay to San Francisco have the best concentrations of all 4 species.  Morro Bay would be the furthest south for sea otters.   Elkhorn Slough (Moss Landing) and Monterey Bay Aquarium area is best for sea otters.  Keep in mind that federal law prevents you from getting closer than 200 feet in the wild.  But at MBA wild otters can often be seen much closer along their shoreline.  Humpbacks and Blue Whales can be seen near Monterey, May through Sept, and mid-Dec through April gray whales  migrate between Mexico and Alaska.  Ano Nuevo north of Santa Cruz  is very good for sea lions and elephant seals.
