How do I set up Photoshop CS6 so that the adjustment layers open up in the layers panel, like it does in CS4, instead of inside the right side of the workspace. Hope this makes sense. Thank you for your time

Any screen shots Danny? On my CS6 setup, I get adjustment layer setting opening up above the layers panel, like the screen shot here.
I think that's the default. The adjustment layer properties/setting panel can be dragged around to be other places in the panel set, or float in its own window as well by clicking the title and dragging it around.
Mine is set up a bit differently. When I first started using CS6, I set the workspace to "Photography". You do this in the upper right corner of the CS6 window. From there, I customized the workspace to my liking.
My Layers panel is on the right side, and Actions, History, and Properties panels are on the left side.
I agree with David, a screenshot of your current workspace will helpful.

Hi, this what I'm getting know, this is how it was when I installed CS6, I'd like to see the adjustment layer opening up right underneath the adjustment layers panel.
I'd like to see the adjustment layer opening up right underneath the adjustment layers panel.
Danny, is the (underlined) adjustment layer you're referring to the Curves window? If so, then here's what to do to get it below your Adjustment Layers panel.
Undock the Properties (Curves window) from the tool bar by holding down the left mouse button and dragging it off the tool bar.
If you look at the very lower right corner of the Adjstment Layers window, you'll see a small triangle. When you hover it, you should see window resizing arrows. Click and drag the bottom window border upward, leaving space for your Curves window.
Next, drag the Curves window to the open area you just created. You may need to resize either/both the Layers and Curves windows for best fit.
Voila!
I hope this is what you are attempting to do!

After wondering if I could make my PS workflow a little easier, I made some tweaks to my CS6 desktop.
I moved the Properties, Actions, and History panels around, leaving space between them vertically and space for the left side and top rulers. On the right side, I added the Histogram window, and also left room on the right for the scroll bar.

So, far, this works better for me.
