Posting larger files

Hello NPNers,
It's a little embarrassing to me, but I am having a very hard time understanding how to post the larger files that will then be reduced for the thumbnail. I'm writing because others may have this problem. The instructions on the website are confusing: at one point it says you can upload a 1 MB image, and then it says it must be no larger than 500 KB.  Clearly lots of people have figured it out, but not everyone.

I usually export from Lightroom 4. Can someone who does this also please give me some guidance? Under "file settings" I have checked the box "limit file to 500 KB." Under Image Sizing, I have checked "Resize to fit, Long edge 1200 pixels." I also had checked the box "don't enlarge" which may be the problem. I checked 721 pixels per inch for "Resolution," but I'm not sure if that is correct.

I had no problems with the old system, but when we changed this past year I began having difficulties. Thanks in advance for any help on what I am sure is a simple solution. I have posted a few images lately that people have wanted to see a larger image, but I haven't quite figured it out.

Kathy,

With the new system, you can upload 1600px (long axis length) files up to 1 MB in size as your original post.  If you do a repost although it says you can upload a 1 MB file, the software will only let you upload a 500 KB image.  You can also post a 720 pixel/500 KB file (more about that shortly).  In Lightroom, the export doesn't care what you set for resolution, but typically this would be between 240 and 300 pixels per inch if you're planning to make a print.  It's also worth noting that if you're posting a vertical, a 1600 pixel image will require scrolling, so it's probably better to cut that pixel size down (on my 27" iMac, that's 1200 pixels, but that will vary with screen size.  If you only upload the large file, the NPN software will automatically generate the 720 pixel file and the thumb.  However, it's clear that when the NPN software downsizes the image to 720 pixels it compresses the dark tones considerably, so there are a fair number of folks who create both the 720 pixels/500KB and the 1600 pixels/1MB images and upload both.

We'll get this fixed!

I haven't posted to the forums for quite some time until this week and I had the same problem, Kathy. For my next post, I uploaded a small version as well and that seemed to fix the problem as both the large version and thumbnail had the correct contrast.

So basically, if you have an image over 500kb, it will not post large even if the long side is over 720 pixels.
So my compromise is 1400 pixels and as close to 500 kb to maintain quality.
Nothing over 1000 pixels vertical.

David, that's not right.  I routinely post 1600 px, 900 MB images as the original and let the software downsize to the 720px version.  It's only if you try to post in a comment that you can't get up to the 1MB limit.  I do limit to 1200 pixels vertically to keep viewers from needing to scroll to see the full image.  1000 pixels might be a safer size limit.

Thanks for the help. I discovered my problem: I was not posting in the right spot.I was putting the larger file in the second box. I think I'll be fine with this now. I knew it must be a simple solution!  Mark, I think you meant in that last post that you post a 900KB image, not 900MB!

You're right Kathy....but what's 3 orders of magnitude between friends....

I'm not sure if this is known as well, or the best place to put this, but wanted to mention.

I just added a comment to my recent post in Landscape. I wanted to add a new re-worked image to the comment.  Below every "Post a Comment" dialogue box - even this one here, it says "Upload .jpg file (1600 pixels/1MB maximum" then you click Choose File.  Well, for posting in comments it only allows 500kb or LESS - we're unable to upload 1MB size.

So, can you change either the max file size OR change the note for uploading images in comments to reflect the actual requirement?

FYI....

I agree with Lon on this one, Jim.

A <500KB, 720 px image posted as a comment is fine with me, but a larger file size would certainly help with the jpeg compression.

Thanks,
