Ok everyone, let's talk large format printers!  I am considering the fact that someday I will be needing a new printer.  Currently, I have the HP Designjet 130.  I have had it for 10 years, and I suspect that the day after they decide to suspend support for it, something really bad will happen to mine.  I have a maintenance support contract for it, and so far not only has the printer worked well, but  they also have supported it well.  Frankly, as I hear about other printers and their problems, I am even more impressed with mine. But I know it won't last forever and I want to be prepared, as I doubt that HP will continue that printer line forever.  (Will they?)

I do all of my own printing; I have ever since I bought this printer.  I also have now or had an HP 9180 (worthless) and a couple of small Epsons ( good ).  But my first love is big prints. The DJ130 does 23-inch wide images, and I've printed some big ones.  I think the largest was 23.5 inches tall and 40+ inches long.

So what are people's preferences and experiences?  Does anyone here have experience with the HP Z-series printers?  I definitely want to stay with a printer that's at least as big as this one.  I  don't know anything about the Canon printers and have heard both really good and really bad things about them.  Most of the photographers I know  who do harge format printing have one of the Epsons, like the old 3880 or the 4800/4900 series.

I will check on some of the other sites, also; I know some of them had forums dedicated to large format, but I haven't been on them in quite awhile, so though I'd ask here first. Looking forward to any info on this!   cool

I have a 24" carriage Epson 7600 that I purchased 10 years ago when they first came out.  It's needed no maintanence.  It just chugs along.  I don't know how well it will print on watercolor paper but I've compared prints it's made on Epson Premium Luster paper with prints made with the latest Epson printer and I couldn't tell which printer made which print.

Thanks for the reply, Dan.

Yes, I have heard good things about the 7600. Good thing about Epsons, there are lots of them around, and I think Epson will be in the printer business for a long, long time! Have you ever had clogging problems with yours?

I do like my HP, despite it using dye ink. I just worry that HP  will go out of the photo printer business one of these days pretty soon, and I also worry about continuing to get ink and heads for it.
