Photoshop guru's, any advice or even just clarification will be appreciated.
I just now have tried to use the focus area selection option new to CC2014 and every time I did, Photoshop crashed. An Internet search revealed sketchy information but I did download the latest driver for my video card and that did not help. In the end I had to turn off "open GL" in the "advanced graphics processor settings" dropdown. I also set the "drawing mode" to "basic". Previously I had the drawing mode set to advanced and all check boxes checked on rest of the "advanced graphics processor settings" dropdown and Photoshop hummed merrily along.
So right away I assume my graphics card is out of date. Another Internet search to Adobe GPU FAQ reveals that my card should still work with CC2014. It is an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460.
So my two questions are: 1) most importantly, what am I losing by having the reduced settings now set in PS preferences? 2)Less important but sure wondering why Adobe says my card is still OK but it doesn't work with the advanced settings?
Before you suspect the video card as being the culprit, I would suspect this is a bug in Photoshop. I have a GT430 GPU and all the advanced settings in CS6 are checked except for 30 bit display, and CS6 hums right along.
I found this link to the Adobe knowledgebase on the Large Format forum regarding GPU Acceleration in PS that may help answer your questions.

John, I started having crashes just like that recently. I discovered that my cache levels was set to 1, not 4 in Preferences --> Performance, and the size was at 128KB instead of 1024KB. That's the second time that's happened in the last 12 months, where the Cache size gets changed to 1. You NEVER want it that low, so check your settings. If it's 1, get it to 4 and size to 1024KB and then maybe download the latest drivers again and do a clean re-install of the video drivers. In the NVidia set-up you'll see a Custom setting, choose that and on the next page will be a check box that says "Perform a Clean Install". Highly recommended every time you get a driver update from NVidia/GeForce.

Definitely do this, John. It takes a little longer since the installer has to clean out old files, but you're assured of a clean install without leftover stuff that could gum up the works.
Also, as Paul mentioned, check your Cache Levels and Tile Size in Preferences.

If you haven't already, submit a bug report to Adobe.
