Strange ghosting
I was working on this photo, which was a 13 second exposure with a Vari-ND filter (probably a bit over 1/2 way in the darkness range) & I noticed what at first I thought was a 2nd ridge on the upper right. Then I saw that it was exactly the same as the one "in front". It's kind of faint, but looking at 100%, it (as well as the dust spots -- this is un processed) is fairly obvious. Have any of you (the few who still look at this forum) seen this before? What do you think?

????? I'm not seeing this.

Here's a 100% crop. It is faint, that's why I thought it was just a foggy outline of the next cliff.

Did you shoot any without the Vari-ND? If so, do they show ghosting? Possible internal reflection inside the Vari-ND filter? I agree this is puzzling. I don't believe I've ever seen anything quite like it.
You've got some vignetting in the upper left corner, probably because the Vari-ND was too thick for that wide a lens. (The vignetting will be in all four corners, it's just most obvious in the sky.)

Glenn,
Yes, I saw the vignetting -- even when I'd zoom all the way out to 70mm, it was still there, though to a lesser degree. As I'd mentioned, it's an unprocessed shot. Figured I'd shoot a little extra wide & crop it out. I didn't shoot any of exactly that composition in that direction w/o the Vari-ND, but when I shot the other direction (south), there was none and in that direction but a different composition, there is none (nor a ridge that looks similar). Like you, I thought it must be a diffraction from the layers of glass.
