On the heels of Pentax's medium format 50 meg comes the recent announcement from Canon.

Seems exciting. It will be interesting to see real world test results.
Reading the replies was both informative and entertaining.

Wow, 50 megs :jump:
Can only wonder what the price tag will be when it's released

Hey Howard, I thought I saw someplace where it was to be under $4k, which is half the $8k needed for the Pentax MF 50 megger........

Can't wait, the 50mp rumours have been flying for a while but now it looks like it's right around the corner. I get requests for big canvas prints sometimes for shots that I haven't vertically shot and stitched, so 50mp will do just fine, lol!

I knew something was coming when the Canon site showed the 5D Mark III with it's new list price of $3099, down $400 from original release.

I'll be posting my 5D3 for sale once that baby is available, that's for sure.

Holy Moly! 50 megs is almost scary! You definitely better have your technique perfected.

Disappointed with this camera, Though not really a replacement for 5DMIII this has its own niche in the EOS lineup. I think it should have been 36mp or max 40mp same crop mode. Also ISO performance is a big question ? since canon USA says its the same as 7DMII which is not great. The fps is also just 5 and does not increase with crop modes. I guess we will have to wait and see its use in real world but best bet is for studio shoot and wedding or even for those photographers who need large prints. Will wait for the 5DM4 and upgrade for 1Dx slated for March hopefully :)

I use a 50 meg CFV back for my ancient Hasselblad 500CM. What I will say is that many more pixels can matter, but one needs to up their game of precision photography to take advantage. A similar shot of climbers on a mountain (Denali) taken with 21 mp vrs the 50 reveals that in the larger mp image the climbers have two legs instead of one. As with all things compromise is made in areas to achieve some more outstanding charchteristic.

It will be interesting to see how the new Canon shakes out. Not usually an early adopter of anything I can wait to sift through the various comments and evaluate their validity.

What I think will be the telling item is if the pixel pitch is so miniscule that resolution may suffer. There must enough distance between the cells on the chip so that contrast between pixels is retained. With the MF digital backs, the pixel pitch is much larger, i.e. the 50MPx are spread over a greater area, so the ultimate resolution (line pairs/mm) is greater.

With a camera such as this one you'll need some seriously great (and expensive) glass in order to realize what the sensor can provide.

It will be interesting to see the independent test results.

Canon claims.... That the latest generation of Ell glass is optimized for the higher MP sensors. The removal (sort of) of the anti alias filter helps the individual pixel resolution though diffraction remains an issue.
