Interesting news about a Canon 5Ds, 5D Mark IV and big price drop on the 1Dc:

None of the above. Sony.

Ya know, Bret, if I were just getting started, or had the means to dump all the Canon stuff I had and start over, Sony would top my list of new gear.

I hear ya, Bob. It was a difficult decision for me to make but after 16 years with Canon, I'm selling it all and switching to Sony.

Let me know if you have any good deals!
I have read about some pretty high quality adapters that mount Canon lenses on Sony bodies. They seem to retain AF, etc etc, but the AF is very slow. And they're not cheap ($400).
I'd certainly like to hear someone's first hand experiences or try one out.

Bret, are you going with the existing Sony bodies, or waiting for their upcoming release, and do you plan to use Sony glass or adapted lenses?

This is interesting news for Canon. I use a Sony NEX 6 and like it. I have rented an A7S and while I like the camera Sony needs more lenses for the full frame E Mount. Yes you can use adapted lenses but then you are back to most of the bulk of an SLR. With the NEX 6 and its power zoom kit lens I have a tiny point and shoot sized kit. But they lack that with the A7 models. Now if Samyang made true dedicated lenses for it that might sway me as a A7R and A7S combo would be sweet

But for now I am going with my 5D2 kit and NEX 6 kit. Still pretty compact since I don't do long lenses.

I do hope Canon prices it right. Might be tempting.

wow, bh just emailed me the 5DS and 5DS R announcement...that was fast. 50+ MP sounds awfully tempting, but im so much more interested in good DR, which Sony obviously is leading...

Great news for Canon landscape shooters... but two years too late? As tempting as 50mp sounds, the Sony A7R has spoiled me with its compact body, tilting LCD, and most importantly excellent dynamic range. Would be difficult to give those up. Besides, I bet that Sony will be quick to answer with a high mp camera of its own.

Of course if you're an autofocus shooter with Canon glass, it's a different story. But would you really want to be shooting a 50mp camera on autofocus anyways?

Bill: I'll be using all Sony lenses initially. I'll eventually add a couple of the Canon tilt/shift lenses to my arsenal. I'm picking up the a7II for my adventure work and as a back-up body, and then I'll purchase whatever replaces the a7R for all my landscape work.

For me it's going to be a tough choice between the 5DsR and the A7RII (A9?). I prefer to avoid using adapted lenses, but a 50MP Exmor sensor will be awfully tempting. Since the 5Ds won't be shipping until June, there should be time to see some files from both systems.

The smaller size and weight of the Sony system (camera and lenses) is one of the biggest selling points for me. The extra 2+ stops of dynamic range is awfully helpful, too. The Sony image files impressed me from day one. There's so much more fine detail than in any Canon camera I've ever had. It'll be interesting to see if the new 50MP Canon files are able to hold the same kind of detail that I was seeing from the a7R. I'm sure the Canon's are great cameras - they just aren't for me any more.

At the Shindig last night, someone brought a 30"x10" crop of the full rez, 5Ds bride sample from the Canon website.
The detail was stunning !! And this was from the in-camera processed jpeg, using their Fine Details picture style.

Going with the 5DS, unless....

Part because I do Motorsports Photography and my super-fast 300/2.8 + TC's cannot be replaced. But also because I really prefer the optical viewfinder. It might be because I see very good long with contacts and probably need reading glasses now for anything close; but also because I simply did not find the Sony A7R EVF very good for sensitive color or ND filter work. Maybe the next gen EVF's will do better. I also have large hands and was uncomfortable with the A7R size- so essentially ergonomics.

I say "unless"... Sony still has time to convince me - perhaps with their next box. I have strongly considered carrying the A7R as a second "camera back". I did last summer in Colorado and it worked well.

Jack and Brett, you guys mind sharing what kind of lenses your using with your sony's? I think I'm going to pick one up in the next couple months sometime, but I'm not to sure what kind of lenses I should get to go with.

Thanks for any info.

Jeremy: I used only Sony FE lenses - the 16-35, 24-70 and 70-200. They're all at least as good as their Canon counterparts but smaller. The Sony 16-35 is far and away better than the Canon 16-35 f/2.8 Mark II. Much sharper edges and better flare control when shooting toward the sun. The Sony 24-70 is as good, if not slightly better than, my Canon 24-105. Sony 70-200 is also sharper than my Canon 70-300. Overall, files from the A7R and associated lenses showed much more fine detail than I've ever seen from any Canon camera/lens combo I've used.

Thanks for the info Brett, that's what I was hoping to hear. I know the adapters probably work perfectly fine, but for some reason my mind wants to think that they are somehow less stable/more prone to problems.
