Here is my full review of the new Canon 7D Mark II and why it is a game changer for low light long exposure photography:

The 7D Mark II sets new standards in low banding noise in the Canon line, improved sensitivity, and the game changer for low light long exposure photography is about 10x lower dark current.

Hi Roger. Thanks as always for this great in depth review and detailed discussion of sensor performance. While I did understand much of the discussion I do have to admit some was over my head. One take home I got was that the internet is rife with comments from people who are well meaning but much less knowledgeable about the actual data. I also feel that many people are just not using their equipment in the best manner to get the most out of it. I am retiring at the end of 2014 and will have more flexible time. I hope to begin to get back into astronomy and do some imaging. Thanks again for this detailed discussion. :wavey:

Thanks for the excellent, comprehensive review, Roger.

If you had to choose your body/lens combo for night star shots (and auroras) ranging from 30 seconds to several minutes and you wanted to go 16mm wide, would you choose the 7D2+10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 combo, or would you choose the 6D+16-35 f 28L II combo?

You come very close to answering this in your Final Comments. It "sounds like" you would go with the 6D. But since the 10-22 on the 7D2 yields approximately 16mm, I'm wondering which one you would choose.

Thanks again very much indeed, Roger.

P.S. Ed, I'm retiring at the end of the year too. I share your hopes.

That's a very impressive review, Roger. Much of it was beyond my easy comprehension but I was impressed by your stats and validations of your conclusions. I own the Mark 2 and have been very pleased with it so far, though shooting conditions and a temporary (hopefully) lack of birds has limited my experience with it so far. I'll rarely use the camera for extremely low light photography but for birds I believe it's going to be the "cat's meow" for a good long time.

Thank you for a fine review - this kind of writing isn't easy to do.

Thanks all,

Lance, your question: 7D2 +10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 versus 6D+16-35 f/2.8 is easy. The 16-35 f/2.8 is a much larger aperture so will record many more stars. I would choose the 6D. Even if the 10-22mm was f/2.8, its aperture is still much smaller, then the 16-35 collects more light from the subject. So again the 6D. When using the same lens on both cameras and if the subject fits in the frame of the 7D2, then I would choose the 7D2.
