All;
I was just asked by a well known author how much I would charge for him to use a photo of mine (beached whale) in his upcoming book. He has written 6 books before and this will be a major publication. I'm assuming worldwide use, forever, in digital/print. My name will be in the caption
I have only sold images for publication to two bird guide authors and received $50 for each image. I'm assuming I would be asking for much more as this isn't a photo-based book (it's really an environmental novel). Any help would be appreciated, thanks to all

Luke, I highly recommend purchasing FotoQuote. They've actually got a 20% Off sale going right now.

Max - is fotoquote something that needs to be purchased/upgraded every year? Or can you buy it once and, at least reasonably, expect a few years out of it? I do very little sales (though I put in very little effort) so $120 can be tough to justify

You can buy it once and it will last a while. There are no requirements for renewing the license annually. It works well as a baseline for the types of rates you can charge for various uses, license durations, etc. I don't adhere to their exact numbers, but instead adjust my rates based on FQ's suggestions.
