In 1996, the lightning-caused Hochderffer fire swept across 16,400 acres just north of the San Francisco Peaks outside of Flagstaff. I remember sitting in a summer class at NAU, looking out the window and seeing the first billowing clouds of smoke, knowing those were not cumulus clouds. This image was taken this morning 10-15-2014, over 18 years since that fire.

New Life Rising from the Ashes
While ATV'ing west of Grand Lake we came across an area that had burned in recent years. I found this group of flowers literally emerging out of the ashes.

And since it seems to be a slow month, here's one more...this is the aftermath of the fire seen in the star trail shot.

A stormy dawn at Lake Abraham, just east of Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada. Interestingly, despite the appearance of the sky, it was early April, and the weather that morning was 32 degrees (F) with a light rain at my back. To this day I don't know what possessed me to stand behind my tripod in those conditions for 45 minutes before this scene unfolded.

When you've waited your entire life to visit the magnificence of Glacier National Park, it's disheartening to find that magnificent scenery shrouded in the blue haze of a major forest fire. This was the scene looking SW towards West Glacier from up on the Going to the Sun Road.

Aftermath of the Hayman Fire on a foggy winter morning.

I went up Medano Pass from the Sand Dunes the fall after the fire up there and it was an amazing sight, one side of the road looked like this (yes, it's color not B&W), the other side of the road resplendent in golden aspen.
