For those who have interest in film, more specifically transparency film, it looks like the group of folks at Ferrania are about to make things happen finally. It's been a long last year but they have worked very hard at it and the Italian government is helping out quite a bit too. Here is a link on things as they are coming together and their request for help in a Kickstarter to secure "Big Boy" before an old part of the 3M plant falls to waste.

I have to wonder...."why?". Is there really that big of a demand for film these days? Seems that as digital cameras get better, cheaper, smaller.... that film will continue to go the way of buggy whips. I'm old enough to have shot many (many) rolls of film in the past. I can't really think of any reason why I would want to go back. Someone enlighten me please.

Hi Charlie, I guess a short response would be a bit cliche with saying "each to his own". "Or maybe it's just a cult thing". However, that would be way over simplifying the issue.
Your points on the digital aspects of price, smaller, better sensors, etc. are all valid and truly make sense. At the same time the cost of film, processing, and availability of all that is getting pricier and harder to find.

I could spend a lot of space here responding but I'll try to summarize my thoughts a bit. This again would be my own thoughts and not sure about others. To a certain extent it gives me thoughts of my many years in drag racing. I grew up in the muscle car era and spent years racing those era type vehicles. Most all of the folks I raced with back then moved from racing over time to vintage muscle cars & street rods. They just could not break completely from their roots so to speak. Maybe a bit like vinyl records and CD's or MP3's.
I cannot really call in the fact that all of it is prehistoric born, as there are many younger folks joining the all analog photographic site all the time APUG. I've seen it grow almost 5k in membership in the last year. I wish I could say the same for some of the other photographic sites I cherish that seem to be struggling for membership and or attendance.

Anyway, I find the usage of digital is ever growing and will only get better. However, for the style of photography many of us still do it's not a required unit of media, film still does the job if we can absorb the pain associated with the usage.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the reply. I didn't know about the APUG website, or the "movement" behind analog film. Thanks for the information, and I really did learn something today.

Personally, I think this is more like leaving your '66 Chevelle in the driveway while you ride your horse into town for a gallon of milk.... but like you said..." to each his own."

I'll keep an eye on Ferrania too. It'll be interesting to see how things develop.

:toast: The Kickstarter reached it's goal of $250k and there are still 17 days left with additional pledges / purchases still taking place.
