A Change of Guard
Please see Large image

Fall season above treeline is in full transition. I shot this scene last week while visiting our awesome Gore Mountains. Maybe 5 minutes after I took the image it began to rain. The weather forecast called for 10% rain so I sat there minus a rain coat...in a down coat through the short downpour. Note to self, down coats are not good in rain!

Tech stuff: Two image vertical hand stitch with a 24mm tse. The top image was hand exposure blended for the sky and mountains only. The bottom image was shot at f14 and included the entire tundra and water scene. I changed the focal plane of the bottom image with the shift feature of the lens which allowed me to use F14 and still get perfect depth of field and not have to shoot a f20-22 or use any focus blending. Ive been trying to avoid focus blending as of late. These kinds of windy alpine scenes are not easy to focus blend.

Comments Critique welcome.

Beautiful Kane, worth the drenching! I love the tones in the clouds, they mesh really well with the colors great colors in the grasses. Great comp as well. :toast:

I can kind of feel the wind. Like the comp and colors.

This looks mighty fine with the gold grass against the blue water and sky. I particular like how you processed the sky. The contour of the grassy horizon gives a slight ccw tilt to me.

Doug, nice eye your right about the tilt.

Sweet shot! Love the colors and dramatic stormy/windy mood. And of course the comp is perfect. Goes to show you don't need a calm reflection for a nice alpine pond photo! I too noticed the slight CCW tilt; even if it's natural it might be good to compensate just ever so slightly.

And yes, I agree... I'll take a single shot tilt any day over a mess of focus blending. I can't believe how many photographers put up with that mess as a routine technique!

Pretty shot!
Note to Kane: 'official' forecasts for the mountains almost always under-forecast rain chances (so, 10% usually is more like 30 or 40  ) The reason for this is that forecasters live in the flatlands, and don't have a clue. Course, you already knew this...
