I am going on a backpacking trip this fall with a friend whose experience as a photographer is limited to his smart phone. He wants to pick up a camera for the trip. I would think an inexpensive, easy to use, somewhat weather resistant point and shoot camera would be appropriate, if there is any that meets this criteria. I really am out of the loop on point and shoot cameras. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Not my bag either but I seem to recall some pretty good reviews of some of the weather resistant mirrorless SLR's. These are also very light and compact while usually offering more features than P&S and still offering the ability go grow through more lenses if the bug bites.
I'd just do web searches for "weather resistant P&S" and "weather resistant mirrorless" and see what you get. Seems like I recall Olympus having quite a selection. DP Photo review is usually a good source of info too.
Sorry not more help.

Another vote for the Canon SX-50. My wife uses one in her field work. Decent quality and weather reistant, good performance across a variety of conditions, from Macro to Supertelephoto.

I have had several Canon point &shoot cameras over the years. They are wonderful little cameras! Very intuitive and easy to operate..so, although I don't know anything about the SX-50, I'm sure it would get my vote, especially for someone with so little camera experience. I'm not sure what the latest version of my last p&s (SX10 IS) is, but it has served me well, when I couldn't bring my larger DSLR. This SX 10 IS even has interchangeable lenses, which made it much more versatile than a basic p&s.
