Canon 580 EX flashgun - any similar problems?

My canon 580EX, just out of warranty, developed peculiar marks on the casing. It looked rather like cigarette burns, which wasn't possible. The unit is rarely used (amateur) and has not been subjected to any trauma. It was sent to a canon repair centre who advised that the "CBA assembly" needed replaced because it was damaged. They were unable to say how it had been damaged. The bill is half the cost of a new unit. Seems to me something was overheating and causing the damage to the case. I will get in touch with canon, but don't expect much help from previous calls to them.

Anyone else experienced this?

Secondly, how would this flashgun respond to 8 frame per second rapid fire offered by the 1D2? Does it simply give up after the first flash or would it indeed be harmed in any way? Your help and advice is appreciated.

The burns are most likely from the Better Beamer fresnel lens. I have burn marks as well, and I think most BB users have them. I suggest taking it off when moving your camera about. If you are not using a BB........??

I use a secondary Canon set of batteries especially designed for this - takes 8 AA's, giving you 12 in all. You can custom set the 580EX to derive power first from the external battery.

I hope this is what you were looking for.

Thanks Kwan. How interesting! Yes I do use an extender. I hadn't considered that as a possibility. I suppose Scotland does occasionally see some sushine! The gun was still functioning when I sent it back - wonder why they've found a fault inside then?!! Hmm - I will speak further with them.

Ian-

I second Kwan's comment re the Better Beamer. I detached my flash from the camera with the BB attached, sat it down on the console next to me in my vehicle for a couple of minutes while messing with the camera, and suddenly smelled the acrid smell of burning plastic. I looked down and the sunlight coming through the windshield was focused right on the flash casing and beginning to burn it. So I have one scar, and am now very careful with the BB mounted! Fortunately the damage was only cosmetic!

My first thought was "beamer burns". I always try to put the screen away when to in actual use.
