Frankly, I'm a little surprised they had not heard of lenses getting stuck on a camera. This seemed to be a problem that happened frequently in the sports photography community after Nikon released the D4 and D800. I know at least one photographer who switched to Canon because it kept happening to him and Nikon's responsiveness to the issue was terrible.

Thanks for the report - I was wondering how it would turn out.

I good local repair facility that you can trust is a wonderful asset to any photographer. I assume you used Precision Camera Repair in Sacramento instead of sending to Nikon from your past service experience. Are they an authorized Nikon repair facility? Do they do the work on their premises or send it out to Nikon?

I've heard other stories of stuck lenses over the years on Nikons and other brands so I'm surprised that PCR was unfamiliar with that.

Yes, Precision Repair is excellent. Have used them before, and they ARE an authorized Nikon repair place (most other brands too). I drive it up there (2 hrs) rather than pack and ship things anywhere, even the Nikon place in S Ca. All work is done ON premises.
With your and Max's comments about other stuck lenses, and since this was a brand new 80-400, you can bet I'll be talking to the Nikon people.
Still, I'm very grateful to have gotten off this easy.
Thanks for the help and concern -

Sandy, that's good news in that the cost was less than you predicted--still a chunk of change, though. I'm glad you got everything resolved.

Since I now have a Nikon DSLR, knowing that there is an excellent place to take it if something goes awry is good news. I'm only a couple of hours SE from Sacto, so Precision Repair sounds perfect.

Would you please send me their address and phone number via NPN e-mail? Thanks in advance.

Glad you're home safe and up and running again!
