DX Lens on a D800E Body!

I'm considering getting the AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 12-24mm f/4G IF-ED to be used on my D800E. I was going to purchase the 14-24mm lens but it has the permanent hood that can't be removed.

Can this lens even be used on the D800E FX body?

What kind of problems will I have using the 12-24mm lens? Any recommendations on what I should get?

Thanks

The full frame 14-24 will give you an extreme wide angle on an FX body. The 12-24 DX lens won't cover the full frame sensor in the FX body, so the body will switch to DX mode and just use a smaller part of the full frame sensor. And you'll have to apply the 1.5x "crop factor" to the 12-24 so it will give the field of view of an 18-36. So, you'll loose the advantage of the massive MP of the FX sensor and you will loose the wide angle of view.

Why should a fixed hood on the 14-24 be an issue? I'd never use such a wide angle without the optimized hood to protect it and block stray light. If you want to mount graduated ND filters there seems to be an expensive adapter that would permit it.

If you want the advantage of a using a screw on filter the 16-35mm f4 FX lens would probably be your choice, otherwise the 14-24 is such a primo lens and I have a filter system for it. It has both neutral density, haze and a polarizer filters and it's made by fotodiox called wonderpana. It's a cool system, but pricey. The d800 has the crop factor but you lose all of the MP's that are best about it. I only use the crop factor on my longer lens to get closer.
