Insure your equipment!

I insure all my camera equipment on my State Farm jewelry/floater policy. Although I've never had to use it for my equipment, I've used it many times for jewelry. Even if I buy used equipment, State Farm lets me insure the lens or other item for full replacement value if bought new. It only adds pennies to my policy and is worth millions for my state of mind! Also, unlike a car claim, this type of claim does not hike up your rates if you use it.

Although my home and everything else is insured with State Farm, I'm sure other companies have the same type policy. Many folks don't realize, that it's not just for jewelry!

Good advice, but for the professionals out there, a basic "Personal Articles" policy will not necessarily work. State Farm booted me during a time when only about 10% of my income came from photography because they deemed me a "professional." It's a great value and an excellent option for amateurs, but once you start making money off your photos, your insurance provider may not keep you for long.
