Hi All,

I was poking around the Nikon site and found this announcement for a free Beta trial of Nikon Capture NX-D.

The final version should be available this summer. Cost is unknown.

If you use either Nikon Capture NX or NX-2, this product will replace it. I could not find any info regarding version upgrade pricing.

If you decide to download and use the Beta, read the info carefully, and be sure to read the FAQ.

Very interesting. I used the original version of Nikon Capture and found that it produced results superior to Photoshop with some, but not all, images.

Some of the copy is not very well written, or else not well translated from Japanese.

One would think that Nikon would announce this beta to (1) owners of previous versions of Nikon Capture, (2) Nikon NPS members, or even (3) all registered owners of Nikon cameras. But your post here, Preston, is the first I've heard of it.

I downloaded the beta version a few weeks ago. I have Capture NX 2 and really like using it although it does tend to crash a lot on my computer. I thought they just needed to tweak that program a little but they have actually removed most of the best parts from it and as far as I can tell the NX D software is nothing more than a glorified version of View NX. There are no tools for local editing at all which is a shame because there were some features on NX 2 that aren't available in Lightroom nor Nik products. It isn't an upgrade IMO, it's a total annihilation of a pretty decent product.
