Lightroom seems to have suffered a major seizure on my desktop computer. It opens quickly and I can look at the menus, but as soon as I try to do anything it goes into "not responding". I think my next step it to reinstall it, but I would like to know if that's going to mess with my catalog. Any Lightroom gurus out there know?
Your Lightroom catalog consists of 2, possibly 3 physical files (3 is you are using Smart Previews). Those files will not be affected by re-installing LightRoom. Of course you have backups of your LightRoom catalog, right?
On Windows the default location of the LightRoom catalog is:
C:\Users\[user name]\Pictures\Lightroom\Lightroom 5 Catalog.lrcat
On a Mac the default location of the LightRoom catalog is:
/Users/[user name]/Pictures/Lightroom/Lightroom 5 Catalog.lrcat
Of course your catalog may be in a different location if you specified so.
If nothing else, just go find your catalog, make a copy to a safe location just so you can sleep better if you aren't making regular catalog backups.
Hope that helps.

Thanks, Keith. I have been backing it up weekly. Can't remember for sure what the schedule is and when the last one was, but I haven't added a whole lot in the last week anyhow. I'll go in and make a spare backup just for the heck of it
