I just received my review copy of Rare Birds of North America by Steve Howell, Ian Lewington, and Will Russell from Princeton University Press. So far I've only had tme to flip through the pages so a more thorough review of the book will have to wait until later on my blog.

This is a beautiful book, with a clean layout, high quality paintings, printed on quality paper. Each covered species has all the information any birder could want for identification and distribution.

I've been having fun stumbling on species I've already seen in AZ: Eared Quetzal, Plain-capped Starthroat, Berylline Hummingbird, Rufous-backed Thrush [aka Robin], Aztec Thrush, Rufous-capped Warbler, Flame-colored Tanager, Streak-backed Oriole, Baikel Teal, Blue-footed Booby, Northern Jacana, Nutting's Flycatcher; and elsewhere in the U.S.: White-winged Tern (DE), Whiskered Tern (DE), Wood Sandpiper (CT), Spotted Redshank (NY).

Then there are all the rare birds I've chased and missed in AZ and elsewhere!

I can't imagine any serious birder who wouldn't want to own a copy.

cool! didn't realize it was out yet--it's been waiting in my amazon cart for a month or two. I figured it would mostly be for drooling over stuff I'll never see, but looking at your list, there's actually quite a few that I've seen (or hope to).

Thanks, Richard. I remember seeing something about it when I was ordering another book. I'll have to put it on my list.

Brian, it's not released yet. It's scheduled for release Feb 16. We've got that and a new, expanded version of Sibley on March 11. If the birds re as good as the books, it may be a great spring.

There was a copy available on 2/10/14 at Changing Hands Bookstore in Tempe, AZ. I skimmed through it at the store around 1:00 pm and found my review copy in the mail at 5:00 pm. So you might find it already on the shelf at your local bookstore right now!
