For those unable to get to Bosque, but still seeking sandhills, geese, and lots more - our local refuges here in Northern California offer great things.

This was one birder's report from this morning:

> 200+ Sandhill Cranes
> 200+ Ross' Geese
> 2,950 Snow Geese.
> 150 Cackling Geese
> 16,000+ Greater White-fronted Geese
> 1 American Bittern
> 3 Green Heron
> 30 Yellow-headed blackbirds
> 2 Merlin
> 2 Ferruginous Hawks

Email me for more info and directions, if interested.

It is interesting to me that when there is talk about photographing Sandhill Cranes that most of the talk centers around Bosque. I am surprised that more photographers active on NPN do not go to the Platte River Basin in Nebraska in March to shot the Sandhill Crane migration. The Rowe Audubon Sanctuary has two kinds of blinds. One costs $25/person and will get you very close to 8 or 10 thousand cranes at either sunrise or sunset. I shoot a 400mm lens and get frame filling shots. The other blind is a photographers blind that puts you right out with the cranes for both sunset and sunrise. Then you can drive the roads around the area and shoot the cranes in the fields all day. This is one of the great wildlife spectacles in North America.
