Good points:- Superbly sharp, great background and well lit.
Not so good points:- maybe a vertical composition would have worked better
Bad points:- Lack of beak. Sounds daft but if someone had never seen a snipe before they would go away with a false impression
if this was their first view of one.

Hi Keith,

I don't know, if it's my crapy monitor at work, but rock looks too bright and is in fact competing for attention with the bird. I agree with John, that vertical would be, what I would go after in this position. I don't know about the beak.. On one hand I agree with John, that snipe's beak is so dominant, that it would help to see one, on the other hand, this is the way they rest. So your photo shows a bird in a position it's often found......

Cheers,
Marko

Thanks John and Marko must agree when it comes to composition I'm not the best, I have a lot of Snipe images I will post some with the beak in full view.

All looks fine to me, Keith. Shows of its beautiful markings nicely. :toast:

On my laptop the rock looks blown on my Mac the contrast is fine, so platform will affect

Cropped a tad high, I would have liked a bit more room above the subject, but its a minor point.

Beak or no beak its still a fine image :toast: :toast:

Hi Keith,

Nice & sharp looking, clean background so no problems there. I don't have an issue with the beak under wing - the bird is resting, but wary and watching you without being alarmed to the edge of flight.

My biggest problem with the image is your cropping (is there a reason why you're going for 10x8 proportions?) - I find the image unbalanced as it stands and it doesn't fall easily to the eye. There's either not enough green to the left hand side, or there's too much lichen rock (which, as it's brighter drags my eye to it & away from the bird). Playing around a little in photoshop with cropping, I'd probably go to a 'wider' crop and lose some of the rock from the bottom and just makes it feel a touch more balanced to me. If you're happy for me to do it, then I can post a re-cropped version to show you.

Hi Keith,

Sorry - been rather busy recently so only just had a chance to grab the shot and reframe it for you. It's not perfect by any means.

I've left the image same width, but cropped in from the bottom to remove some of the perch, and balanced that by cropping some more from the top of the image. There's also a strong diagonal formed by the eye, back of the bird and it's tail and I've positioned the crop to put that onto the diagonal line between top-right and bottom-left. To me it just seems to help make the image 'easier' for the eye to scan as our eyes are used to 'reading' in a 'Z' pattern eg left->right & top to bottom.
