end of the day
Gave myself a treat on Friday and spent the afternoon in the Slimbridge car park photographing a few things in the hedgerow (wood pigeons mainly…) whist waiting for the golden half hour of light and the swans flying in from the surrounding fields.

Three Bewicks swans - best of my session, boosted with a bit of adjustment to the colour temperature to enhance the sunset colours. Full frame but cropped from native 4/3rds to 3/2 format. In flight shots is not one of the strengths of the Olympus E3 but occasionally it will hit focus a he right time.....

Olympus E3, 300mm F2.8. ISO 400, 1/1000s at F5 handheld

Wish I had time for a treat Mike :frown:

It's a pretty scene, with the sky behind almost reminiscent of a bit of smoke/mist. You might like to revisit the cropping to exclude the orange bit of cloud beneath the leftmost swan as I'm finding it draws my eye.

Thanks Nick

It will be a clone out jb to retain the room for the swans to fly into. I had left it in as an indication of the sunset but can see what you mean.

Mike recon you have caught the moment ,never really tried flying subjects myself so I would be well pleased with this.

Thanks Keith

FYI - I gave up with CAF long time ago with the E3 body as being too erratic and now use a repeated SAF refocus technique for tracking BIF. As these swans are relative slow moving and a fairly predictable flight path this works quite well. It also has the advantage that there is a pause in the multi shot sequence allowing the CF card more time to write and free up internal memory buffer and so doesn't lock up.

Good composition. Works well. Yeah, cloning rather than cropping on the top of the orange cloud would be best to maintain the comp.

Hi Mike,

Birds in fllight. I can't remember when I did that last...

It's a nice photo, and I would sure throw that Olimpus in to the ditch, if it would not focus on this.. But then I'm from Balkan peninsula, so I can react some times :jump:.

Cheers,
Marko

Now thats a nice photo, the composition is good but what really makes it for me is the warm light coming through the primaries of the first and last bird, it just lifts the definition and interest

Thanks all,

Tom that's what attracted me to this particular shot in the sequence - that its not a pure silhouette image
