Canon released an unexpected firmware today (last time they told us 4 months in advance, lol), and one of the things fixed is a biggie. THe firmware can be downloaded from here.

The list of bugs fixed are:

1. Fixes a phenomenon in which the flash may not fire depending on the timing of when the shutter button is pressed.
2. Fixes a phenomenon in which the AF microadjustment value may change.*
3. Fixes a phenomenon in which the LCD monitor may show a line of false color along boundaries of high contrast.
4. Fixes a phenomenon in which the histogram of a LiveView image is incorrectly displayed when an HDMI cable is connected.
5. Enables the brightness of the camera's LCD monitor to be adjusted even when an HDMI cable is connected.

* The phenomenon listed in 2 was addressed with Firmware Version
1.2.1, and has been further improved with Firmware Version 1.2.3.

(Notice they call it a "phenomenon"... uh HUH. How about BUG?!?!?)

#2 is a biggie, we really don't want AF Micro Adjustment changing for the lenses we've dialed in, ya think?? Although this obviously doesn't affect using MF on a tripod.

I'm thrilled #1 is fixed, I shot a wedding last Friday and it was a situation where I HAD to use flash for the first time, and when the bridal party started walking to the platform, the flash WOULD NOT go off until I turned the 5D3 off and on again. Now I know why. Thank you Canon, impeccable timing, both in ceremony and release of firmware.

If anyone installs the update before I get home tonight and get to it, let us know how it goes. In other words, if you brick your camera, warn us! Otherwise I'll do it tonight and report back. I'm the hopeless early adopter, I don't mind toeing the water first, lol.

ALL CLEAR

I did the upgrade and it went fine. It took 3:53 to complete from the point where you actually execute the upgrade, after the firmware loads off of your card. Speaking of, I used an older Lexar 200X 4GB CF card that I keep buried for emergencies, not the 1000X's I use normally... it's possible that a faster card might lend to faster update times. Maybe.

Anyhoo, seems safe to upgrade. Before I started the procedure, I did format my card in-camera before sticking into the reader on my PC and copying the firmware file onto it. I wanted the card newly formatted by the 5D3 once I reinserted it with the firmware now loaded on there. Probably an overly cautious move on my part, but cameras seem to like the CF cards that they format, not ones that Windows formats, and being I'm running Win 8.1 I didn't want any Microsoft new "feature" to add something to the card that might brick my camera body.
