Icon Alert!
I have shot this picture of the Maroon Bells many times but the conditions were near perfect on Tuesday October 1, 2013, so me and about 50 other photographers lined up at the lake to wait for the perfect light. I got my shot about 10am. At 10:15am the ranger came by and told us that we had to be out of the area by noon due to the government shutdown. Rod Kissinger and I had driven over from Ridgway, Colorado that morning on the chance that the Forest Service would not be up and aware of the shutdown until about 9 am when they start charging the normal fee to get in. We were correct and the gates were still open at 8am. Some things about government agencies are still predicable!

A few more shots from the trip are below and you can see all my shots on my website here:

Congratualations Tom. There is a good reason that some places become icons, because they are just beautiful locations. I guess I'll have to get in line for a chance at a shot like that of my own sometime.

You've got a nice collection there from your trip. We might have crossed paths at one time or another. I did Kebler Pass, County Road 7, and Owl Creek Pass during that week as well. I'm still trying to sift through my pictures and see if I got any good enough to post.

Ken, I wish Rod and I knew you were out there, we could have at least hooked up for dinner.

You didn't let me know you were going to be out there either Tom. I was in Dillon with my family Sept 29 - Oct 5. Sure wish I could have hooked up with you guys for a day.

Wayne, it sounds like we could have had a mini fall gathering in Colorado!

Great series and glad you were able to get in to get your shots.

Very, very nice series Tom. I'm sure that was a trip to remember! I really want to go back some Fall to the same areas. I wonder if you guys got to eat at the Outlaw in Ouray?

Beautiful stuff, Tom! No place like Colorado that time of year...looks like you and Rod caught it at a a great time.

Jan, we did not get a chance to eat at Outlaw, but we did eat at the True Grit Cafe and the Adobe Inn in Ridgway.
The Adobe Inn was some of the best authenic Mexican food I have ever had. Not your typical Mexican resturant.

Bill, weird year for colors. They were late in places but by the end of the week they were good. My best shooting day was the last morning on Kebler Pass road and the Ohio Pass area.
